[edit] Verifying Facts in the former Soviet Union

I would like to justify the claims that Sayram is the oldest, if not among the oldest, cities in Kazakhstan. There are many materials that are currently unavailable to me, as I am currently living in Sayram, the city itself.

There is very little Internet access here, and what there is is strictly via modem. Most of the statistics that I have come from books originally written in Uzbek or Russian, several of which are self published, which seems to be common in the former Soviet Union [I saw similar local-history-books in Uzbekistan]. When you remember that there was an Official History that often bore no relationship with actual history, you begin to understand why so many scholars chose to self-publish.

I joined a discussion with several auteur historians via email who were interested especially in the Avesta verification. There is one branch of Zoroastrian historians that believe that Zoroaster [the prophet himself] was from an unknown town in the NorthEastern corner of the Persian empire -- the same region as Sayram. While it is not my goal to claim Sayram as his birthplace, I would like to take the idea of his originating from this area as some kind of evidence to support that SomeOne was living here in that time period.

Anyway, I'm fine with not being able to claim Sayram as Kazakhstan's oldest city, so long as relatively young cities like Taraz and Hazrat-e Turkestan cannot claim the same simply by quoting "Official Kazakhstan" statistics which are written by national bias [Kazakh ethnic pride].

Hope someone can give some advice... Xhancock 18:25, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: DYK

Template talk:Did you know is my best bet to submit a DYK. Best, feydey 01:39, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query On 16 February 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Sayram, Kazakhstan, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

I changed the hook as there was some objection over the claimed age. --Yomanganitalk 10:41, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Shymkent

Please, don't change the article if you don't have a citation, since the information which you put in is controversial. Best, BernardTom 07:47, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] CA WikiProject Participant list

Hey - please be cautious editing the participant list. I'm sure no ill will was intended, but you deleted my username (which someone else deleted part of before and made into gobbledygook). Anyway, welcome aboard, I'm glad to see more people coming over from registan as I sent the original invite who knows how long ago. Let me know if you have questions about the wiki-format, posting, project, etc, as I'd be glad to help. Aelfthrytha (talk) 04:43, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
