The X1 Professional Client (formerly X1 Enterprise Client and X1 Desktop Search) is a desktop search product for Microsoft Windows. It is developed by X1 Technologies, Inc.

The program creates an index of the contents present in a user's computer or network. It then allows the user to search for specific files and/or emails using keywords.

[edit] History

Beta versions of X1 Professional Client were originally released in 2002 under the product name Find. To build the early versions of Find/X1, Bill Gross of Idealab reassembled the team that developed the original Magellan software. The product was first sold and the company (and product) name changed to X1 Technologies, Inc. in 2003 (the company remains an Idealab operating company). The original desktop search product was licensed to users for a price of $50 or $100 through the company's website.

In December 2004, Yahoo! licensed the X1 client technology from X1 technologies and distributed it as a free product under the name of Yahoo! Desktop Search. [1] At that time, the X1 client was still commercial and development of newer versions continued, but the version licensed to Yahoo! could be obtained free of cost. Eventually, in June 2006, X1 Client also became freely available. [2] Soon after, sometime in 2007, it is no longer free. [3]

[edit] Versions

The X1 Professional Client lets an individual PC user search across all of the content he or she has access to. The interface gives the user a preview of the search results and provides multiple options to take action on the file. End users can search over 400 data formats along with the most commonly used email clients using common search characters and terms, keywords or Boolean search. In addition, end users can search and sort by any parameter, with the results shown in the original formats, including media.

Starting with Version 6.0, the X1 Professional Client introduced the ability to extend the client search capabilities through plugins. The plugins allow users to search external data sources (search engines, email archives, RSS feeds) and federate [1] them with the local search results.

A 30 day trial of the X1 Professional Client can be downloaded from the company's website [2]. This version includes an optional Yahoo! toolbar for searching the web using X1.

[edit] Federation

The X1 Professional Client 6.0 and above includes a federation engine [3] that allows users to simultaneously search across multiple data sources and search engines. The results are asynchronously displayed in the results list and ordered by the default sort column. For example, through federation, users can search their local email PSTs (both locally mounted and "loose" on a share) and offline archived email from a single query presented in a single view. An example of X1's actionable search would be a user selecting a set of email results coming from their online archive and forwarding them via Microsoft Outlook directly from the X1 Client interface.
