X-Wars is a browser-based Sci-Fi MMOG. It contains elements of real-time strategy and business simulation game and you can basically colonize planets, trade, design and produce own space ships, command fleets and fight large battles.
X-Wars was developed by Sebastian Lagemann and Nils Mitoussis, and is offered free to play since 2002. From 2007, the game is maintained by Mediatainment GmbH. The first release was in German language, followed by releases in English, French, Polish, Spanish and Portuguese.
In 2003, X-Wars was awarded the best free browser MMOG by the German magazines c't and PC Action and was noticed by several other publications. Furthermore, X-Wars won the first large annual browsergame competition Super-Browsergame Gold-Award in 2005, followed by an interview of GIGA Television with the developers [1].
[edit] Features
X-Wars allows interaction of a large number of players in one single universe. The largest single universe supported about 20,000 players. Player can specialize the game character prior to game start. The player can choose from 4 races and 7 factions with widespread abilities from aggressive warlord to defensive trading or sabotaging.
One of the most noticeable features is the ability to design individual ship classes from several different base components. Some of them allow camouflage or carrying smaller ships. With the "alliance hangar", players can station fleets at other players' planets and operate from them, or reorganize fleets.
