X-Out (pronounced 'Crossout') is a computer game released by Rainbow Arts in 1989 for C64 and 1990 for Amiga and Atari ST.
X-Out is a horizontal scrolling shoot-em-up game, featuring well-crafted graphics and good sound: Each of the eight levels has its own background tune and pairs of level have their own style.
The game was notable for having a shop that allowed one to convert points into ships and equipment for these ships (actually submarines). These also served as "lives". You could choose between 4 different kinds of submarines (of which you could have up to 4) and equip it with one of 3 kinds of primary weapons (each of which came as either one-way, three-way or enhanced three-way weapon). Secondary weapons ranged from a sonic waves to powershots and target searching missiles. You could also have up to two auxiliary satellites that were basically indestructible and fire with your primary weaponclass. Those satellites could be placed at different positions relative to the ship and had different programmings either dump (staying at the same position), repeatitive movements (up-down in different amplitudes and arcs of different sizes) as well as searching for enemies.
