WZDC-LP is a low-power Telemundo affiliate in the Washington, DC area, located on channel 25. The station is owned by ZGS Broadcast Holdings. WZDC's transmitter is located in the Northeast region of the District of Columbia.
[edit] History
WZDC-LP signed on as W64BW channel 64 on January 25, 1993, as Washington, DC's Telemundo affiliate. On December 1, 1995, the call letters were changed to WZGS-LP, reflecting the station's owner. On June 27, 2000, the call letters were changed to the current WZDC-LP.
On June 3, 2002, the station started a local Spanish newscast, in cooperation with WRC-TV.
On April 10, 2007 WZDC-LP moved to channel 25, as the channel 64 frequency was slated to be phased out of television breadcasting. The move was also required in order to expand its coverage area throughout the metro DC area, including most of Prince George's County in Maryland. When the station was on channel 64, it broadcast on an effective radiated power of 12.5 kilowatts, covering most, but not all of D.C., and was barely viewable outside the capital; cable coverage was necessary to serve the surrounding areas. At the present time, channel 25 is still barely viewable throughout the metropolitan area, as viewers in Montgomery County, (Burtonsville) bordering Howard County in Maryland cannot see its broadcasts, as well as Howard and Anne Arundel Counties in Maryland. This is probably due to interference with the signal of WHAG-TV in nearby Hagerstown.
