[edit] History

In the 1890s, the town of Wylie had been served by a small school[1] with small funding primarily by the parents of the students of the schools. Ovid Birmingham noticed this problem traveling and established Wylie ISD in 1901-1902. He set limits of the district that all citizens in that area would pay taxes to uphold the district. The Birmingham family soon provided money to build the Original Wylie High School. The School has moved from several buildings in its history.

In 2007, Wylie East High School opened for the 2007-2008 school year. The school serves solely the ninth grade students.

Wylie East will become a 9-12 school with Class of 2012 being the first class to graduate after the district voted to go with multiple 9-12 campuses in January 2008.

[edit] Dress code

Wylie School District is enforcing a standardized dress policy for students 5th through 12th grade since the 2006-2007 school year. The dress code requires that students wear solid color polo shirts and khaki, navy, or black Docker-style pants. Shirts must be tucked in and a belt worn around the waist. Just before the 2007-08 school year, the dress code was updated to prohibit the wearing of hooded sweatshirts (aka "hoodies") within the buildings.

[edit] Extracurricular activities

The extracurricular activities offered at Wylie High School are many and varied due to the school's large size. There are chapters of national organizations such as the National Honor Society and the Air Force Junior ROTC, and service organizations such as SkillsUSA, Spanish Club, French Club, and BPA. The usual range of athletic and music organizations are available for students to join.

Wylie Senior High School teams compete in UIL competitions in District 9 of the 5A Class, the class designated for the largest schools. Districts are assigned arbitrarily, with the sole controlling factor being the proximity of available schools.

WHS's 2005 enrollment for competitive purposes is officially listed as 1,905. This is the number used by the UIL when determining what other schools Wylie competes against in all UIL-sponsored athletic and academic competitions.
