WXJK is a Rock formatted radio station based in Farmville, Virginia, owned and operated by David Layne. The station has its studios, offices, and transmitter across route 45 from WFLO. The station broadcasts a wide variety of rock from the 60s to today, with a strong emphasis on the 70s and 80s. The station's active playlist includes over 2,000 songs.
[edit] History
The station signed on in 1991 as a religious station with emphasis on music and teaching. The owner abruptly yanked the format in August of 1992 for a classic rock/oldies format as "WXJK 101.3". As the years went by, the station added deeper cuts of music (many of which are live recordings) and added some modern rock to the playlist, becoming "101.3 FM the X"
In November, 2004, the station's tower fell in a small tornado, causing the station to broadcast from an antenna on top of the studios. After insurance and red tape from the FCC were cleared, the station signed back on from a tower about 50 feet shorter than its predecessor. The station was, however, able to regain most of its former coverage area back.
WXJK attempted to upgrade to a Class C3 station in the late 1990s, but was denied. The explanation for this is that the FCC has divided the country into zones. In Zone I, only stations of classes A, B1, and B are allowed, while in Zone II, only stations of classes A, C3, C2, C1, C0, and C are allowed. WXJK attempted to upgrade to Class C3 but with a tower site in Zone I (the boundary runs very near Farmville, VA).
