WVIR-TV "NBC 29" is a television station in Charlottesville, Virginia, broadcasting locally on channel 29 as an NBC affiliate.

Until 2004, WVIR was the only commercial station in the Charlottesville market affiliated with a major network.

WVIR's programming can also be seen in Harrisonburg on Comcast channel 10.

As of September 18, 2006, WVIR is the area's affiliate of the The CW on the station's new DT3 digital subchannel. The channel is known as "CW 29". Also on this date, a new weekday WVIR-produced newscast at 10 PM began to air on the new subchannel.

Although it does not have a radar of its own, WVIR uses live NOAA NWS radar data from several regional sites in a forecasting system presented onscreen as "Triple Doppler".

On September 13, 2007, WVIR began offering NBC WeatherPlus, NBC's digital weather channel. On-air, WVIR promotes the channel as "NBC 29 WeatherPlus". In addition, WVIR offers local weather to computer users via the WeatherBug service.

On April 19, 2008, WVIR began broadcasting its local news programming in high definition, becoming the first station in Central Virginia and the Central Shenandoah Valley to do so. [1]

[edit] NBC 29/WHSV TV3 Rivalry

For years, NBC 29 and WHSV TV3, a local channel located in Harrisonburg, VA, have been competing for the area of Augusta County. A lot of things have happened within the last few years, including NBC 29 taking Tamara Hinton after she was trained at WHSV, and WHSV making a mock commerical of the NBC 29 weather anchors. As of now, WHSV still continues to maintain more viewers than NBC 29, but recent developments to attract viewers is a new HD simulicast newscast.
