WVAR-AM is a radio station located in Richwood, West Virginia that plays an oldies format. The station also carries West Virginia University basketball and Richwood High School.
In 2003 an ice storm that raveged the southern part of West Virginia caused for trouble at WVAR as the heavy ice toppled over the broadcasting antenna. In the summer the station and its owner raised funds to have a new antenna built in the old antenna's spot atop Hinkle Mountain, a mountain that overlooks Richwood.
On March 13, 2007, J & K Broadcasting, Inc. sold WVAR to Summit Media Broadcasting, LLC for an unknown amount. Summit Media also owns WDBS-FM and WSBG-AM.
On May 15, 2007, WVAR dropped their country format and began simulcasting sister WSGB-AM's oldies format as "The Mighty 1490".
