It serves to identify the station in question visually in a way prose cannot. It is widely distributed by the copyright holder for that purpose. As the value of the image is in the particular unique appearance which is copyrighted, no free alternative can be made. It is low resolution. The image is only being used for informational purposes.

This image is a screenshot of a copyrighted television program or station ID. As such, the copyright for it is most likely owned by the company or corporation that produced it.
