In 1979G.C.,the first Indian teacher to arrive in this place was Varghese and the next year was Sophia Varghese. They both had taught in Wukro Secondary School run by the Ministry of Education. They taught until 1983 and thereafter many foreigners began to come and establish schools and catholic communities. Currently there is a school run by the Catholic communities.

In the past the affar tribe used to come and sell salt from barhelie , a danakle region. These salt has been cut from the mountains near the Red Sea area of the danakle region.
