WTA Austria

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The WTA Austria was a WTA Tour affiliated tennis event held annually from 1973–1998, with some periods of suspension. Four locations hosted the event: Kitzbühel, 1973–1977, 1979–1983, 1990–1993; Vienna, 1978; Bregenz, 1985–1986; Styria, 1994; Maria Lankowitz, 1995–1998. Women's tennis returned to Austria in 2007, with the creation of the Gastein Ladies tournament.

The event was held on outdoor clay for the duration of its existence. Upon its re-introduction to the tour in 1990, it was classed in the Tier IV categoyr of events; it was briefly elevated to a Tier III event in 1993 before being brought down a tier again. Three Austrians won the singles event, all from 1995–1997: Judith Wiesner, Barbara Paulus, and Barbara Schett. Romanian Virginia Ruzici holds the record number of singles wins, with her three victories coming in 1980, 1982, and 1985.
