WSYN (Sunny 103.1) is a Oldies/Classic Hits radio station serving the Myrtle Beach radio market. The current format used to be on 106.5 FM on the radio. The old home for Sunny on 106.5 has become a brand new country station to compete with Gator 107.9.
[edit] History
WYAK-FM "Big Yak" signed on with a country music format in the 1970s. Later the name was changed to Y-103. An AM frequency was added at 1270, though WYAK-AM became a separate station around 1990, first calling itself WXMB and playing southern gospel music. The station became WYAK-AM again later, the first Myrtle Beach area station to air Rush Limbaugh, and broadcast the FM programming part-time. Later the AM station played R & B oldies as WCKN but signed off.
During the mid-90s WYAK-FM was also heard on WVCO 94.9. The Yak name was used briefly again before the switch to the K-103.1 name used from 2000 to 2008. John Boy and Billy have been heard in the morning for several years; since the 2008 format change their show has included classic rock music instead of country.
During its heyday of playing Solid Oldies on the coast of South Carolina, WSYN served as home to many well-known local talents, including Gary "The Freakin' Deacon" Dawson, Kemosabi Joe Johnson, Lou Krieger, Diane Costello, and long-time News and Sports Director Frank Barnhill. In an attempt to improve ratings for the Cumulus Country station, WSYN and WYAK switched frequencies in 2008.
