WRNO (shortwave)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WRNO was a commercial shortwave radio station which began international broadcasting on February 18, 1982 [1] and continued broadcasting through the early 1990s from Metairie, Louisiana. These call letters are still in use by the New Orleans station WRNO-FM.
During the 1980s, WRNO shortwave had a rock music format. Originally this was a separate broadcast from the FM station, but eventually WRNO turned to simulcasting WRNO-FM which also had a rock music format. During the early 1990s WRNO turned to leasing airtime to religious and political commentators until a damaged transmitter forced the station off the air.
The station was off the air for many years until the antenna was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The station was bought in 2001 by a religious broadcaster [2] but is not currently broadcasting according to their website [3]. It is now under the control of its new owner, Good News World Outreach, and Robert Mawire.
