When the market's WB affiliate WAWB (now WUPV) became a UPN affiliate in March 1997, Richmond was left without a full-time WB affiliate. In the early 2000, there were several attempts to launch a stand-alone station to carry the network. There was two candidates for the network affiliate. The first candidate is channel 48 and the second is to launch a brand new station on channel 19. WRID declined the offer and channel 19 became an outlet for Charlottesville's CBS affiliate WCAV in 2004. WWBT, Richmond's NBC affiliate, took secondary WB affiliation in 2001 until August 2006. Then UPN affiliate WUPV took secondary WB affiliation for The WB on selected nights until the closing of the network when it merged with the station's primary affiliate to become The CW.
