William Missouri Downs is an American playwright, director and author. Bill writes many types of plays including Kabuki, political theatre and dark comedies.

His plays have been produced all over the world and have won numerous awards, including the National Playwrights Award, The Norfolk & Southern Festival of New Works and the Larry Corse prize for playwriting.

He studied playwriting under Lanford Wilson and Milan Stitt at the Circle Rep in New York and was mentored by Lew Hunter at UCLA.

Currently he's head of playwriting at the University of Wyoming where he's won over a dozen teaching and research awards. Bill's Introduction to Theatre class continues to be one of the most popular and controversial classes on campus.

He is the author of THE ART OF THEATRE published by Wadsworth, SREENPLAY: WRITING THE PICTURE, published by Silman & James and NAKED PLAYWRITING published by Silman & James.

Bill is a full voting member of both the WGA and the DGA.
