WrestleMania VIII WrestleMania IX WrestleMania X

WrestleMania IX was the ninth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by the World Wrestling Federation. The event took place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, the tagline was "An Event of Epic Proportions".

WrestleMania IX was built around two main storylines: the unstoppable Yokozuna challenging Bret Hart for the WWF Championship; a right he earned by winning the 1993 Royal Rumble, the first man to win a WrestleMania title shot at the Royal Rumble (although, Hulk Hogan had won the 1991 Royal Rumble and went onto face Sgt. Slaughter at WrestleMania VII, his title shot was not granted because of that victory); and the return of Hulk Hogan, who had departed the WWF following WrestleMania VIII, teaming up with Brutus Beefcake, to take on the WWF Tag Team Champions, Money Incorporated (Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster).

WrestleMania IX also took a novel approach to its arena by placing it outside in the open air at the risk of possible rain and other weather related incidents.

[edit] Notes

  • This was the first WrestleMania held entirely outdoors.
  • This was the first WrestleMania not to use the traditional red, white, and blue ring ropes. Instead, black and gold ropes were used to coincide with the Ancient Roman theme.
  • A scheduled match between Bam Bam Bigelow and Kamala did not take place. This was the second WrestleMania to have this occur, the first being WrestleMania VIII.
  • Announcer Jim Ross made his WWF debut at this event.
  • This was the only WrestleMania to have two WWF Championship title changes, and the first to have two WWF Championship matches.
  • Wrestlemania IX seems to be universally regarded as the worst Wrestlemania card ever. Critics point to Hogan's unexpected and unwelcomed return as WWF champion, leaving popular former champion Bret Hart as an afterthought. Hogan in fact did not defend the title again until losing it back to Yokozuna at the 1993 King of the Ring. According to both the WWF and Hulk Hogan, this was done so that he could give Yokozuna the rub by dropping the belt back to him at King of the Ring, since Hogan's appearance, which had never even been planned to begin with and was a last minute addition only a few weeks prior to the event, meant that he could put Yokozuna over as a monster by failing to defeat him in his only defense of the belt. However during this time, Hogan did wrestle the Great Muta in Japan during his reign as champion.
  • This was an unlockable arena in the wrestling video game,WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2006.
  • Hulk Hogan suffered an injury prior to WrestleMania IX, which was worked into the storyline of the Mega-Maniacs versus Money Inc. match, with Hogan claiming that DiBiase hired several thugs to try to take him out of the match the night before the event. The injury in question was never specified on the program, but Hogan's eye was heavily discolored and nearly swollen shut.
  • Giant Gonzales' first and only WrestleMania appearance. Undertaker's third consecutive WrestleMania victory, and his only one thus far by way of Disqualification.

[edit] In fiction

  • In the film Groundhog Day a couple who are just recently engaged are given tickets to Wrestlemania. The film was made in 1993, making Wrestlemania IX the Wrestlemania they are given tickets to.
