WRBL is the CBS television affiliate in Columbus, Georgia. It holds the honor of being the first television station in Columbus. After having been established as a radio station, WRBL was originally sold to the Junior Chamber of Commerce for $250. In 1931, after changing owners several more times, it was sold to Jim Woodruff, who was killed in a car wreck in the 1970's. After his death the banks controlled the station until it was bought by Malcolm Glazier's Avant Corporation out of Rochester, New York. He sold it to TCS Partners who in turn sold it to Spartan Radiocasting Company, until they sold WRBL to Media General, its current owners, in 2000. Its transmitter, located in Cusseta, Georgia, once held the record as the tallest man-made structure on the face of the Earth.
