WQUT, the flagship station of Citadel Broadcasting Tri-Cities (Johnson City TN-Kingsport TN-Bristol TN/VA), began broadcasting in 1948 as WJHL-FM at 101.5 megaHertz. In 1960, the call letters changed to WJCW-FM and its effective radiated power became 100,000 watts from its antenna on Buffalo Mountain in Johnson City TN. Currently (2006), the format of WQUT is Classic Rock. WQUT carries the “John Boy and Billy Big Show” from 6:00 to 10:00 AM Monday through Saturday. WQUT is home to the Ronald McDonald House and St. Jude Children’s Hospital Radiothons and is very involved in community activities throughout the Tri-Cities market. Its sister stations are 104.9 WKOS, AM910 WJCW (which signed on in 1938), AM640 WGOC, and AM1320 WKIN.
