WPCB-TV is a Christian television station in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA DMA. It broadcasts its analog signal on UHF channel 40 and its digital signal on UHF channel 50. It is licensed to Greensburg with studios and transmitter in Wall and is the home of Cornerstone Television, which originates most of its programs from the station. WPCB-TV programming is also seen on satellite station WKBS-TV, channel 47 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, which signed on the air in 1985.
[edit] History
Founded by Rev. Russ Bixler, WPCB went on the air on Easter Sunday, 1979. The station has always aired only religious programs. It almost moved to channel 16, which is occupied by WQEX, with Paxson Communications buying channel 40 and converting it to a Pax TV affiliate. However, the religious shows proposed for air on the station were not deemed educational, breaching a requirement in WQEX's license as an educational station. Although the FCC reversed its position, Cornerstone withdrew its application and the sale was cancelled, keeping WPCB on channel 40.[1]
As such, WPCB remains a commercial licensee without commercials and continues to run Christian programming 24/7, including sermons, music and children's programming, crusades, magazine shows, talk, and variety shows.
