Maybe I'm looking at it funny, but this would still appear to disable page-wide DEFAULTSORTing for no reason. I honestly doubt that the presence of a non-empty DEFAULTSORT can be tested for, but if it can:

  1. If listas is set, use listas (if DEFAULTSORT is visibly present on the page, someone should generally remove the listas parameter; it will be very, very rare for WP:BIO to need to override DEFAULTSORT; if something is wrong with the DEFAULTSORTing on the page, fix that instead;
  2. else, if DEFAULTSORT is set, use DEFAULTSORT;
  3. else, use PAGENAME (which is of questionable use; see Template talk:WPBiography, where I point out that not using PAGENAME at all gives us a handy list of everthing that needs DEFAULTSORTing.)
