Wortley, West Yorkshire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wortley (pronounced Wurt-ley) is a district of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It begins a one kilometre (⅔ of a mile) to the west of the city centre.
It was known as Wirkelay until about 1700. The manor was owned by the Hopton family until the English Civil War and then afterwards by the Smyth family. It was a weaving township independent of Leeds before turning industrial with coal pits, brickworks and railway depots. In the 1880s it became a part of the expanding (then) town of Leeds.
Wortley itself is split into three different areas. The part of Wortley situated between Leeds City Centre, Armley and Holbeck is known as New Wortley. The part of Wortley near to Farnley known as Lower Wortley. Upper Wortley also exists and is situated between Armley and Lower Wortley.
Wortley today has many car dealerships with top brand car dealers such as Honda, Porsche, Ford and Mazda. These are popular in this area of the city due to the location of the Leeds Outer Ring Road that stretches through Lower Wortley connecting to the M1 Motorway.
