Worthington Hooker School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Worthington Hooker School is a small neighborhood school in New Haven, Connecticut and is part of the New Haven public school system. The school is named after former Yale University professor and physician Dr. Worthington Hooker (1806-1867). Currently, the school serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade in an elementary school (K-2) and a middle school (3-8).

The main school building, currently housing kindergarten through grade 2, is located at 180 Canner Street and was erected in 1900. As the main school building is insufficiently large to hold the middle school, grades 3-8 are located in the former Saint Stanislaus School building at 804 State Street. Worthington Hooker School only held grades K-4 until around 1990 when the middle school was added.

As of summer 2007, renovations of the main school building have been completed and there are plans for construction of a new school site for the middle school on nearby Whitney Avenue.

The student body of around 350 students (circa 2001) has a very high percentage of children of Yale University graduate students, and as such, is much more multi-cultural than other New Haven public schools.

The current principal is Carol Kennedy, and the vice principal is Joan Roberta.

Worthington Hooker was started in 1904, as a small private school for wealthy families. Now it has grown much, and is a school for all incomes.
