World Youth Scrabble Championships

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first World Youth Scrabble Championships were held in Wollongong, Australia 2006. Competitors from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, England, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Oman, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand competed. WYSC was open to anyone under the age of 18 on January 1 2006.

The event started on Friday December 1 and finished on Sunday December 3. The championships consisted of 20 games using the Aupair System. After these 20 games the top 2 people played off in a best of 5 series. Prizes were awarded to the top 10 places. There was also an encouragement award which was awarded to the youngest player finishing in the top 25. In 2006 the encouragement award was won by Lahiru Elvitigala of Sri Lanka.

1 game per round was annotated and broadcasted live onto the web by the Western Scrabble Network, a Scrabble Club which focuses on tournament Scrabble.
