World Snooker Championship 2000

The 2000 Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between 15 April and 1 May 2000. It was won by Mark Williams, who beat fellow Welsh player Matthew Stevens in the final by 18 frames to 16.

Notable moments from the championship include:
- Mark Williams became only the third Welsh snooker player to win the world title after Ray Reardon and Terry Griffiths and the first since 1979.
- Joe Swail returned to the Top 16 in the snooker world rankings after reaching the semi-final against Matthew Stevens. He got a special award after dropping out of the 16, then out of the Top 32 and climbing back the 16 again.
- Swail's place in the Top 16 ended Steve Davis' long run in the elite - he had been in since 1980 including hold the World No 1 spot from 1983 to 1990. Davis lost 11-13 to John Higgins in the second round. He later returned in 2003 which he still remains as of the 2007/2008 list.
- Referee John Newton refereed his first and only World final and he retired from refereeing after the match.
- The two pre-tournament favourites, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O'Sullivan, were both eliminated in the first round - Hendry by crucible debutant Stuart Bingham (10-7) and O'Sullivan by David Gray (10-9).
