[edit] Notable Moments
- Future World Champions Joe Johnson and John Parrott made their debuts. Parrott beat the 1983 semi-finalist Tony Knowles 10-7 in the first round before losing to Dennis Taylor who beat Johnson 1-10 in the first round.
- Other players who made their debuts that year were Neal Foulds, Warren King, Roy Andrewartha, Marcel Gauvreau, Paul Mifsud (the first Maltese player), Mario Morra and Eddie Sinclair. All the debutants except Foulds and King played at the Crucible for the first and only time and all except Foulds and John Parrott lost their first round matches.

By the evening session he had made breaks of 64,72 and 53 to trail by only one frame 16-17 but Davis won the 34th frame and sealed victory 18-16.
- Steve Davis meanwhile became the first player at the Crucible to retain the title.
