Words (Between the Lines of Age) is the final track on Neil Young's 1972 album Harvest. It has a typical Neil Young structure consisting of four chords during the multiple improvised solos.[citation needed]
Harvest is probably Neil Young's must successful album with one track, "Heart of Gold", reaching #1 in the Billboard Hot 100. However, the track "Words (Between the Lines of Age)" is mostly overlooked by fans as it is the last track on the album. The lyrics feature typical themes used by Young of ordinary people, monarchies and poverty.
The song is notable for alternating between a standard 4/4 time signature for verses and choruses and an unusual 11(6+5)/8 for interludes.
The Stray Gators accompany Young on this song as well as the majority of the Harvest album.
[edit] Lyrics
Most Neil Young lyrics are somewhat abstract and this is indeed a style he has been regarded for. The lyrics were partly improvised adding to the whole feeling of abstractness. The lyrics have a sad tone.
