[edit] Welcome to Wikipedia!
Welcome to Wikipedia! At Wikipedia, we're all about building consensus, and using critical thinking and rational judgment to decide what the best course of action is in any situation. Although we do have so-called "policies", with the exception of a very few that are necessary for legal reasons (copyright policy, policies relating to slandering living people, etc.), you should be aware that most of these are totally non-binding. Generally, they are simply descriptions of what has typically happened in the past, that at most are suggestions that we are not obligated to abide by. I would like to encourage you, in your dealings with others on Wikipedia, to resist the temptation to advocate a certain course of action because "the rules say so", and instead would urge you make arguments based on what serves the best interests of the encyclopedia in the given situation.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy yourself here, and I look forward to seeing what you have to contribute to our project. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me at my user talk page. Dan Beale-Cocks 11:11, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] accounts for individuals, not groups
Hello. Having a username that suggests a "role account" sometimes causes trouble. The way WP is licenced makes role accounts tricky, and some editors will think that your (clearly declared!) COI is a problem. Can I suggest that who ever edits any WiPP pages (or similar, like I guess new LINks or social care involvement) makes only uncontroversial edits to the article, and uses the talk page to discuss tricky edits before they're made? That should sort out any problems. Kind regards, Dan Beale-Cocks 11:15, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] WP:STYLE
Please see the links in the welcome message below. I have the following issues with your edits in the article Working in Partnership Programme (WiPP).
- 1) Conflict of interest. You seem to work there or are associated with the place. It is nice that you have declared it openly and I appreciate that. But, please go through the section on conflict of interest to prevent this from affecting your article.
- 2) Providing sources is very important, and you have done so in your article. But, they are all provided as external sources (outside wikipedia) especially within the article. This is discouraged as a policy in Wikipedia. Try to provide internal links to other wikipedia articles and External Links may come as a separate section below. Do go through WP:CITE to find out how to provide in-text notes/citations.
Thanks! Prashanthns (talk) 11:48, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- Your message and Dan's
Many thanks for your messages. Don't want to take too much of your time as I am sure you have much to do with millions of people accessing wiki. I was trying to work it out as to how to contact you; I finally found your page though not yet Dan's. I just wanted to say that your suggestions were very helpful and also that I really really liked your very positive attitude. I hope I can contribute in a small measure to this growing community. I do not have any monetary connections with WiPP, that is that I am not paid by them or will not gain financially from them. Take care and with regards WorkingInPartnershipProgramme (talk) 12:02, 26 April 2008 (UTC) WiPP 26/04/08 (hope this is how we are supposed to or able to communicate with you).

- Thanks for taking time to read WP:COI. Just as a reminder and a pointer to you, I have pasted below the relevant section that might benefit you. Just click User talk:Kmweber to leave a message on Dan's talk page, and yes, you are right - this is the way we communicate on wikipedia! I will go ahead and do some clean-up on the article then! Thanks.

[edit] How to avoid COI edits
Wikipedia is "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit," but if you have a conflict of interest avoid, or exercise great caution when:
- Editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with,
- Participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors,
- Linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
- and you must always:
- Avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially neutral point of view, verifiability, and autobiography.

[edit] Finding pages
Hello. Glad you're having fun here. Unfortunately some people take Conflict of Interest *very* seriouosly at WP. I understand that you're not paid by them, and that's good. I'm going to sign my comment by adding four tildes, this will put my signature on the page. You should be able to click that (if you're using a traditional browser / computer, if you're using some access technology I have no idea what you'll do, sorry!) and it'll take you to my user ppage. There's some links at the top, you'll want to clicky the "discussion" tab. Or, you can just reply here. See the link at the top that says "watch"? Users have watch lists, so you can keep track of pages. I'll put your page on my watch list. Kind Regards, Dan Beale-Cocks 21:35, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] WiPP
Hope the WiPP page is getting better. Once you say its ok, more material can be added. Still not sure how to reach Dan; clicked on the link you provided but could not find the 'push to talk' on his page. Best wishes —Preceding unsigned comment added by WorkingInPartnershipProgramme (talk • contribs) 14:10, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- I am watching the page. After clicking on Dan's user page link on your page, you must click 'Discussion' tab on his user page. This is his talk page. On clicking Discussion tab, you can click "New section" tab on this page to leave him a message. This is the way you can leave messages on any user's talk page. In my case, I have chosen to put a separate option "Push to talk", which other users may or may not have. For this time, click here, but in future, you can use this method I described above to talk to other users. I will take a look at the page again and leave comments if any on the talk page of the page. Cheers. Prashanthns (talk) 14:17, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- Please do not feel obliged to wait for my ok! I am just another editor like you. See WP:BOLD. Feel free and add/edit as per the wikipedia policies. DO see these links. THanks. Prashanthns (talk) 14:19, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
Have seen the concern the administrator has with my edits. Please be reassured that the WiPP page is not to advertise something. There are some very good tools and definitions available from this programme and putting references to these words and definitions would be a good idea on wiki as people across the world will be able to benefit from it. Wiki has become the best resource in the world for a good and immediate understanding of some of the most complex concepts, definitions and happenings in the world. When we give a detailed map of say Canada on wiki, that does not mean that we are advertising for the country and its tourism industry. If you look at the resource that WiPP provides, you will see that it is a good attempt at providing something valuable to people. Almost like how wiki is a valuable resource, I think WiPP is trying to be a good resource for people. So putting WiPP on wiki would be a very good idea, it would be consistent with wiki philosophy which I admire a lot. WorkingInPartnershipProgramme (talk) 12:01, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

- This is often not a reflection on the user, and you are encouraged to choose a new account name which does meet our guidelines and are invited to contribute to Wikipedia under an appropriate username. If you feel this block was made in error, you may quickly and easily appeal it - see below.
Our username policy provides guidance on selecting your username. In brief, usernames should not be offensive, disruptive, promotional, related to a 'real-world' group or organization, confusing, or misleading.
If you have already made edits and wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name you may request a change in username which is quick and easy. To do so, please follow these directions:
-
- Add {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. This is possible because even when you are blocked, you can still edit your own talk page.
- At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note, you may only request a name that is not already in use. The account is created upon acceptance – do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change since we can far easier allocate your new name to you, if it is not yet used. Usernames that have already been taken are listed here. For more information, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username.
