Talk:World sales and certifications for Mariah Carey
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The data do not match. For example, @Mariah Carey' is stated to have sold 17M illion, but adding up all the markets available, I get to 8.8. Daydream, stated to have sold 25 million, adds up to 17.5, including a mysterious million from China (data basically impossible to come by), still, about 7.5 million missing in about 7/8% of teh world market missing.
'Mariah Carey' adds up to 7.4Million, but it states 17M -that's 10 Million missing!!! It might have shipped 9M in the US (but sold less than 5) and with 1 M in Europe, 17 is again, a mismatch. Does her record company normally ship twice as many albums as they sell? That's just counter-productive. Or do we not get the correct data from Sopundscan etc for Mariah Carey? TEOM has shipped 8M accoording to Island (2 weeks ago) so can't have sold 9.2, but that's a small difference (7.6 adding up all the countries, still 2 M more...)
Mariah Carey came out a year before Soundscan started, that's why it shows it sold less than 5 million. 128.180.211.181 18:42, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
- I do hope you know Europe and The US aren't the only places to sell albums. Some of what you said dosen't make sense too me. Record companies can't just inflate album sales like that, especially not with a well known artist like Mariah (although it has happened a few times with Madonna). Her sales are accurate. Some of Mariah's albums came out before soundscan started, which was in 1991. Record club sales are also included.

[edit] missing albums!!
also there are missing albums like:
emotions @ 9M Unplugged @ 6.3M Butterfly @ 12M Rainbow @ 10M and number ones is actually 17.5, not 15M
However, there are no actual official worldwide sales for any artist, so it can't be accurate! most people actually go by shipments! special when it comes to madonna. Considering most people seem to think she's outsold mariah. Mariah picked up the awards for best selling female artist several times. so i don't get it!
- I know right? I agree with you! And hopefully will get more albums on this page.172.150.26.101 22:47, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Japanese sales clean-up
I am fixing up her sales for Japan. Some of them are inflated quite a bit. The information I am editting is collected from the Oricon magazine and the Oricon yearbook. Also, for future reference, RIAJ certifies in millions after sales pass 1 million, therefore they are certified every million after that (ex. 1M, 2M, 3M so on).
Her million certifications are:
- Mariah Carey Mariah Carey M
- Emotions Mariah Carey M
- Music Box Mariah Carey M
- Merry Christmas Mariah Carey 2M
- Daydream Mariah Carey M (undercertified as it sold 2.2 mill)
- Butterfly Mariah Carey M
- 1's Mariah Carey 3M
- Rainbow Mariah Carey M

[edit] Sales vs Certifications
The sales figures for the quoted certifications are showing multiple errors. Editors should not use the certifications as listed at the bottom, as these are wrong. Use the official IFPI one. IFPI Full List of Countries Certifications. Also note that many countries have different rates for domestic artists compared to international artists. 60.234.242.196 (talk) 08:25, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] figures are rubbish
Mariah hasnt sold that amount of records - thats wishful thinking. 30 Million - in hers and her fans dreams - madonna has sold alot more.

[edit] Why is this article needed?
I would have thought that certification and sales information would fit better into the MC discography (which does cover some of the same territory). In any event, there's lots of inappropriate material in here (POV descriptions of the albums etc.) What's the logic behind having a separate article just for certifications? Gusworld (talk) 12:33, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
- On reflection, I can see that the tables do offer a different way of summarising the information, though they need much better referencing. But the album description stuff is pretty much all inappropriate, since that material is covered better in the album articles and there's masses of POV material. Going to edit to reflect this by adding main article links to replace the text. Gusworld (talk) 03:29, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Changes made. The references do need to be a lot more specific though (the current section is something of a lazy kludge). Footnotes on every element of each table would make it hard to read and would be repetitive, so I think the best way to handle this would be to make the references section specify a source for each key element of information e.g.
- US chart positions from (link and references)
- US sales data from (link and references)
- US certification data from (link and references)
and so in for each country. Note that in this context merely linking to the site for the organisation that issues certifications wouldn't be sufficient; the MC-relevant detail would be needed. Gusworld (talk) 04:22, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, and clearly someone with more enthusiasm/knowledge needs to add tables for Rainbow, E=MC2 (though that might be better held off as the sales figures will change constantly for a while) and MTV Unplugged. Gusworld (talk) 04:24, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- Good to see those tables added. Note that TBA can't be used in tables, as Wikipedia is not a crystal ball; it's immaterial whether the sales figures in a given country would qualify a release for a certification, it can only be added here once it actually happens.
