- 1941 - The Blockade Runner Badge for German navy is instituted.
- 1944 - Accidental American bombing of the Swiss city of Schaffhausen after the bombers got lost.
- 1945 - Operation Iceberg - United States troops land on Okinawa in the last campaign of the war.

- 1942 - Japanese forces begin an assault on the United States and Filipino troops on the Bataan Peninsula.
- 1946 - Japanese Lt. General Masaharu Homma is executed in the Philippines for leading the Bataan Death March.
- 1945 - American troops liberate the Ohrdruf labor camp in Germany.
- 1945 - Soviet Army takes control of Hungary.
- 1942 - Japanese Navy attacks Colombo in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). Royal Navy Cruisers HMS Cornwall and HMS Dorsetshire are sunk southwest of the island.
- 1944 - 270 inhabitants of the Greek town Kleisoura are executed by the Germans.
- 1941 - Operation Castigo begins; Germany invades Kingdom of Yugoslavia and Greece.
- 1939 - Italy invades Albania.
- 1943 - In Terebovlia, Ukraine, Germans order 1,100 Jews to undress to their underwear and march through the city to the nearby village of Plebanivka. They were then shot dead and buried in ditches.
- 1945 - The Japanese battleship Yamato, the largest battleship ever constructed, is sunk 200 miles north of Okinawa while en-route on a suicide mission in Operation Ten-Go.
- 1945 - Visoko was liberated by the 7th, 9th and 17th Krajina brigades from the Tenth division of Yugoslav Partisan forces.
