Wood Oaks Junior High School

Wood Oaks Jr. High in Illinois is part of Northbrook School District 27, and contains grades 6-8. The school has a population of about 470 students, and is run by 70 staff members. The school principal is Mr. Schaffer and the assistant principal is Ms. Lombardo. The official mascot is a Wildcat. Students of Wood Oaks come from Shabonee Elementary School. Students go from Wood Oaks to Glenbrook North, also known as GBN.

Wood Oaks consists of over 50 classrooms, 2 gyms, over 20 bathrooms, and 3 computer labs.

[edit] Class Lengths

The students of Wood Oaks have a 10 period class schedule, with each classroom period being 42 minutes long. 5th and 6th, which are lunch and elective periods, are 35 minutes long. There is a 3 minute passing period in between classes.

[edit] Awards/Honors

Wood Oaks was ranked the best junior high school in Cook County according to a study done in 2006 by Chicago Magazine. To be on honorroll, students must have a 3.75 or above. Those that make honorroll are then posted in the local newspaper.

Students are required to take math, language arts, reading, social studies, gym, science, and one foreign language or Applied Studies/Resources. There are two foreign languages to choose from, Spanish and French. There are Honors classes for gifted students know as ELP classes. ELP stands for extended learning program.

Wood Oaks has sports teams for various sports. Teams are separated by gender and grade. The teams compete in volleyball, basketball, cross country, girl's softball, soccer, and track. Students are required to keep at least a C-average to participate in sports.

The Wood Oaks band has participated in various events. It has participated in Lake County Live, where, in 2005, they finished 2nd in their first ever competition. Wood Oaks has also participated in the IGSMA (Illinois Grade School Musical Association) competition, where they have received the Division 1 ranking every year. Wood Oaks participates in the Memorial Day Parade every year. The Wood Oaks band also marches at the Memorial Day Parade. In the spring of 2007, the Wood Oaks Wind Ensamble, a group of chosen band members, went to the Superstate competition. To get in, they had to make a recording of three songs, which was then sent to a panel of judges. The Wind Ensemble then traveled to Illinois University to play. They did not win.

Wood Oaks students are required to take various tests. All students take the TerraNova, the ISAT, and the NWEA every year. In seventh grade, students are required to take a Constitution test.
