Wonewoc is a village in Juneau County, Wisconsin, United States, along the Baraboo River. The population was 834 at the 2000 census. The village is located within the Town of Wonewoc.

This small village is located in the southern-most part of Juneau County. Geographically Wonewoc is located in an un-glaciated region of Wisconsin. The resulting landscape is filled with jagged bluffs and the scenic Baraboo River runs alongside the town.

The Wonewoc Formation was first described here and named for the village.

George and Lucinda Willard first settled Wonewoc in 1851. The town was incorporated in 1878, and once the railroad was built village growth exploded. The name “Wonewoc” is of Native American origin, and most likely translates to an expression meaning “howling hills”. The population of the town is largely of Germanic descent. When the railroad era ended Wonewoc’s growth halted. Wonewoc is now a quiet, scenic town known for its beauty and close-knit community.[3]

[edit] Tourism and Recreation

Wonewoc is the midpoint of the 400 Trail, one of the areas many bike trails. Bikers, hikers, horse riders all enjoy what the trail has to offer, as well as snowmobile enthusiasts in the winter. Bike passes are available at many of the area businesses. The Baraboo River is available for canoeing and kayaking. A short drive will lead you to a few area lakes, Dutch Hollow and Lake Redstone. There you will have access to fishing, swimming, and other water sports. Wonewoc also offers a public pool, camping and well-kept area parks.

The Wonewoc Spiritualist Camp is in Wonewoc. Within the village are three churches: United Methodist Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and St. Jerome’s Catholic Church.

The village government is made up of a president and board of trustees. The current president is Lee Kutcher, and the board of trustees is made of Rick Field, Randall Norling, Kevin Jennings, Sherry Roehling, Amy Miller, and Scott Jennings. The current chief of police is Julie Ott.

Theodore Fisk, a Wonewoc native, was made famous by traveling throughout the Midwest with a circus act. Belle Case La Follette, whose father was from Wonewoc, married Robert M. La Follette, Sr., governor of Wisconsin and United States senator.[4]
