[edit] Park History

Paul and Alethea Roads obtained property in Amarillo's Thomson Park, opening "Kiddie Land" in 1951. Devoid of trees or water, it mainly was home to scrub grass and sand burs. Mark Miles, then the city's Parks and Recreation director, promised to level the area and transplant trees.

Kiddie Land was opened several months later with three children's rides and a makeshift ticket booth made out of a box from one of the rides. The name was later changed to Wonderland, inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

Currently, the park plays host to more than 200,000 visitors each year. A roller coaster called "Astro World" is expected to be finished and in operation in 2008.[citation needed]
