[edit] Name of the language
I am not sure why this article uses the term "Walamo", instead of some form of Wolaytta/Welaita. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pete unseth (talk • contribs) 00:51, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
- Walamo is the name now used for this language in ISO 639-3. The next edition of Ethnologue will follow suit. (Taivo (talk) 03:56, 14 April 2008 (UTC))
- Welamo is actually considered pejorative by the Welayta, the language should be renamed. — ዮም | (Yom) | Talk • contribs • Ethiopia 04:52, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
- I suggest you submit a change request to ISO 639-3 in that case. You will need documentation. (Taivo (talk) 05:18, 14 April 2008 (UTC))
- That is interesting. Following Taivo's link it appears that he is right. However, I just checked the list of the most recent changes to iso639-3, and no change from Wolaytta to Walamo is documented there. The request for such a change would have been made by SIL Ethiopia, and I'm quite positive that SIL Ethiopia did not make such a request (it would not make any sense). Maybe there is a mistake here. I will enquire about this to see what is going on. Landroving Linguist (talk) 19:17, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- I enquired. The problem is that Wolaytta is one of the few Ethiopian languages with an own iso 639-2 code, and that always used Walamo as the language name. For sake of consistency, ISO 639-3 chose to just take over the 639-2 code. So the request needed to be made to the 639-2 authority (Library of Congress). I just filed this request. Once it is accepted, SIL will follow up by changing ISO 639-3. For now I guess we should stick to Wolaytta as the language name. Landroving Linguist (talk) 21:02, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
- I guess this is proof why Wikipedia should treat experts with more respect: don't argue about reliable sources with them because they can & will change the reliable sources. :) -- llywrch (talk) 18:45, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
- I think it was Winston Churchill who said "History will be kind on me, because I intend to write it." But, alas, you cannot control all the sources... Landroving Linguist (talk) 14:04, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
