WOGI, Froggy 98 FM, is a Froggy branded Country music outlet serving the Pittsburgh area. The station, which is owned by Keymarket, operates at 98.3 MHz with an ERP 3.5 kw and is licensed to Duquesne, Pennsylvania. Its transmitter is located in Pittsburgh. In addition, their format is also simulcasted on their AM sister WFGI at 940 kHz, which is licensed to Charleroi, Pennsylvania.
[edit] History
WOGI was originally Adult Top 40 WESA-FM and was licensed to Charleroi, Pennsylvania. In the late 1990s they flipped to Top 40 as WZKT (Z98), but that format would go away in January 2000 after it was sold to Keymarket, who in turn flipped to its current format. In March 2002 the station's city of license was changed to Duquesne, allowing the station to target Pittsburgh proper.
WOGI is the flagship station of the Froggyland network of stations in the region, which also includes:
- WOGG-FM(Froggy 94.9)/Oliver, Pennsylvania
(Covering Fayette, Greene, Westmoreland Counties)
Prior to becoming WOGG, 94.9 was home to WASP-FM, also running a country format. WOGG's class A signal blankets the Mon Valley and southern-most regions of the Pittsburgh market. Cities targeted include Uniontown, Connellsville, Belle Vernon, Monessen, Monongahela, Masontown, Waynesburg.
- WOGH-FM(Froggy 103.5)/Burgettstown, Pennsylvania
(Serving Washington, Beaver, the South Hills and West Hills of Allegheny County. Also, serves Brooke, Hancock, and Ohio Counites in West Virginia; Jefferson and Belmont County in Ohio)
Prior to becoming WOGH, 103.5 had the WOGE calls for a brief time. Prior to being WOGE, 103.5 was licensed to Steubenville, Ohio and known as WRKY, lastly as a country format. "Rocky 103" targeted the rust-belt Steubenville-Weirton market primarily and the Washington and Wheeling markets secondarily. Since the city of license change to nearby Burgettstown across the border in Washington County, the focus has shifted to serve the South Hills and West Hills of Pittsburgh. Specifically, the cities targeted are Washington, Canonsburg, Peters Township, Bethel Park, Bridgeville, Coraopolis, Robinson, Carnegie. Steubenville, Weirton, Wellsburg, Toronto all still receive an easily receivable signal. WOGH realistically has the largest effective coverage area of all of the "Froggyland" stations. Typical car radios can receive 103.5 from St. Clairsville, Ohio to Seven Springs, PA to Morgantown, WV to Grove City, PA.
- WOGF-FM(Froggy 104.3)/Moon Township, Pennsylvania
(Serving Beaver, Butler, and western parts of Allegheny County in PA; Columbiana and Jefferson County in Ohio.)
Before being WOGF, 104.3 was home to WELA-FM and had a classic hits format. Prior to being classic hits, WELA also had a run of the country format. WOGF recently changed its city of license to Moon Township, PA from East Liverpool, Ohio. The tower location remained in Beaver County, PA. WOGF and sister WOGH have a slight bit of signal overlap in "Froggyland", specifically Beaver County and the west hills of Pittsburgh. Both signals, as well as the main "Froggy", WOGI, are clearly heard in areas near the Pittsburgh International Airport. WOGF has a large signal, as well. WOGF can be effectively be heard on car radios from St. Clairsville, Ohio to Ligonier, PA to Youngstown, OH to Waynesburg, PA.
WFGI-FM (Froggy 95.5) in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, which covers the Johnstown area and eastern portions of the Pittsburgh market, and WWGY in Grove City, Pennsylvania, which covers the Meadville-Franklin market and the western portions of the Pittsburgh market, uses the "Froggy" slogan and is extremely similar to the Keymarket stations, but is not part of the "Froggyland" network and is not owned by Keymarket but rather by Forever Broadcasting, a sister company of primarily the same ownership.
