[edit] Hm...

What do you think of this request as the blocking admin? I decided to ask you- I'd be fine to work with him, but it's the trolling and incivility issues that worry me. Thoughts? Cheers- CattleGirl talk 09:27, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] merge of Declan O'Sullivan

Could you explain a bit more about what you did to Declan O'Sullivan, following what I did. Is this final clean up (i.e., the revision history merge) something I could have or should have done? I'd appreciate is, as I hope to do more of this sort of clean up work (without having to appeal for help each time). Answer me here or on your page, as you wish. (I'll watch your page.) Thanks and best regards, Hult041956 00:26, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Replied at User talk:Hult041956. WODUP 00:37, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I don't mean to be a pest, but allow me to ask once more. What I did to Declan O'Sullivan was no sort of move at all. I did a cut-and-paste merge as instructed in Help:Merging_and_moving_pages#Full-content_paste_merger. I cleaned out the "merged from" article, and left only a redirect there. I left a note in the talk page of the "merged into" article, but no link back to the fossil. (Ah! I'll remember to do that from now on, and have done so since.) But I haven't read anything about merging the page histories. Is this task left for admins to do? (Or have I misunderstood?) As I said, this seems an easy job for newcomers--pruning the old merge proposal list--but I don't want to leave a trail of problems for admins. Thanks again. [edit] Block change

Hi, just letting you know that I made a change to a block you made - I unblocked and reblocked 24.248.250.170 to make the block anon-only, since M79 specialist is blocked by that (see user talk as linked). If there's a specific reason you made the block as it was, feel free to reverse my action, but I figure it's best that we reduce the collateral damage associated with a hard-block. Thanks, Nihiltres(t.l) 23:19, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

I thought anon only with account creation blocked was the default, and I don't remember changing it or know why I would have changed it (I even chose {{anonblock}} as the block summary/reason), but thanks for fixing it. WODUP 23:33, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy Deletion of SEP sesam Article

I am curious as to how it was determined that this is blatant advertising or SPAM. This article was no different in terms of content than articles for other backup softwares and many groupware products. In fact the SEP sesam product is referenced in the article on Scalix so I cannot understand why it would be inappropriate to have an article on SEP sesam. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jthatfield70 (talkcontribs) 20:53, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

(Sep sesam) I took a second look at the article still reads like ad advertisement to me. It exclusively promotes the subject calling it a recovery solution, saying that installing the product yielded an inexpensive yet robust platform, and lacking any neutral secondary sources. WODUP 23:48, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you would consider a neutral secondary source on that point. I could include more specific descriptions of how it works and organizations that are using it as part of a recovery solution but that would seem to be more like a tech support article. I simply thought that readers searching for information may find it helpful to know that such a capability exists. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jthatfield70 (talkcontribs) 00:18, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Neutral secondary sources include things like newspaper articles and industry journals. For more about sourcing, see Wikipedia:Verifiability, Wikipedia:No original research, and Wikipedia:Reliable sources. For more advice on writing your first article, see Wikipedia:Your first article WODUP 02:44, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I understand that. Would the article be acceptable if that section was removed until I can add some neutral sources to it? I know there are several articles being written in industry mags in the next month or so... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jthatfield70 (talkcontribs) 20:46, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure which section you're referring to or why removing only that section would make the article better; the article was written like an advertisement. If you're sure that the subject meets our notability requirements and you can write a well-referenced article in a neutral point of view, please do so. If the subject doesn't meet our notability requirements, please don't create that article. If there aren't yet enough reliable sources from which to write at least a stub article, please don't create the article yet. If you can't write an article in a neutral point of view, please don't; either wait for someone else to create the article, list it at Wikipedia:Requested articles, or discuss it further at Wikipedia:Drawing board. [edit] Audius Mtawarira

I am lost please kindly explain "transcluded onto the page through {{Zimbabwe-bio-stub}}". What does this mean and is this a potential vulnerability that can be exploited for vandalism? Part 16:47, 30 September 2007 (UTC) This is a question relating to my post on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents that you managed to resolve. Part 16:52, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Transcluding is the inclusion of one page's content into another page by reference. The page Template:Zimbabwe-bio-stub, which looks like this:
was changed, and because the code {{zimbabwe-bio-stub}} was on Audius Mtawarira when the template was changed, that page and all other pages that include the template reflected that change. You can read more about transclusion at Wikipedia:Transclusion and substitution (the opposite of transclusion) at Wikipedia:Template substitution. WODUP 17:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lame Drivers deletion

Hey WODUP,
You deleted an entry for Lame Drivers (band) today. I want to see if you saved the text and/or can help point me in the right direction. I understand it was deleted because you felt it "lacked assertion of importance/significance," and I'd like another shot at making this assertion. I think it qualifies because it

  • "Contains at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable" (according to the Wikipedia entry)
  • has toured the US and released albums on small independent labels, covered by music blogs and college radio stations

Maybe these facts and sources still won't qualify as "important" by Wikipedia standards of importance, but if you have the text I'd appreciate your help and/or advice. I've found Wikipedia to be a great source of information about bands large and small, and I want to start contributing what I can.
Thank you
therewasaguy —Preceding unsigned comment added by Therewasaguy (talkcontribs) 07:00, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I restored the article. After reviewing it, I see that it does assert notability because it shares members with Get Him Eat Him, which appears notable. You should probably add information about Lame Drivers' national tour and verify it by citing reliable sources. WODUP 03:29, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

That seems a bit strange. Have I misunderstood what talk pages are for? I think WODUP was just trying to be helpful as he probably is to everyone (including me). Perhaps it would be best to disappear your talk page, Ninja Carrot, or just have a message at the top that they shouldn't talk to you.Alice.S 03:51, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

You haven't misunderstood what talk pages are for. Geoffrey was engaging in petty incivility. I felt that there wasn't anything that I could say to get him to change, and I didn't want to escalate the situation, so I ignored it. It's something I learned from this section. [edit] Image deletion

Hi. I noticed a deletion tag on Image:Penis 005.jpg, apparently done by you per history at Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion/2007_September_26. Then you changed it on Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion/2007_September_26 from Image:Penis 005.jpg to Image:Penis 002.jpg and therefore Image:Penis 002.jpg did get deleted. However, Image:Penis 005.jpg is still there and still tagged for deletion.  ?? -- ALLSTAR ECHO 08:55, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ms. Monster

I see you deleted an earlier Ms. Monster page. Not sure why. She's a legitimate TV personality in San Francisco and has a fairly active web site at http://www.msmonster.com. She's also a contestant on a reality TV show. Seems like a minor celeb for sure, but worth an entry. Oh, and I'm not in any way affiliated with her or her production company. Just seems like a minor celeb worth noting.Dean Esmay 10:17, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

The article said that she hosted a horror show on public-access television every fourth Wednesday at 00:30 Pacific Time. That does not assert notability, so it was deleted under WP:CSD#A7. WODUP (?) 00:29, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, wondering exactly why his article was deleted. (link to self | this message posted here and User talk:68.147.201.9) I deleted the article because it didn't assert the importance or significance of the subject. I'm sorry to hear that he was killed, but Wikipedia is not a memorial site, and articles here should meet our notability guidelines for biographies and musicians. I didn't feel comfortable blocking because the IP's previous final warning was a week ago for vandalism. Now, the IP is adding spam to articles. This makes me think that it's a different person, one who hasn't been properly warned, so I warned them. If someone's obviously a bad-faith editor, they can be blocked right away. Otherwise, they need a recent final warning and they need to have vandalized after the final warning. I see that it's been blocked now. Cheers, WODUP (?) 06:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Satamkar article

Hello. A watchlist hit shows your recent cleanup edits of Satamkar have been reverted by the article's author User:Mxsla and lately Special:Contributions/82.248.106.162. Unfortunately, the author has previously been problematic, restoring a signature multiple times, as well as challenging two sig reverts on user talk pages (mine and User talk:Animum). Article history further shows Mxsla or proxies clearing other editors' changes including a wikify tag. I dislike seeing your work reverted as it clearly improved a marginal article, but engaging in a slow-motion edit war to retain good changes seems counterproductive.

Perhaps you could post a response to Mxsla as to why he or she should not assume WP:OWNership of the article, either in your role of an involved editor or as an administrator. My own remarks and others' edits have been insufficient to change behavior, and the misunderstanding of WP article structure and content persists. Admittedly, this is a decidedly minor article of dubious quality, so a decision by you not to waste more time there would be perfectly reasonable too. Michael Devore 03:55, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for letting me know. I left a message for xem on xyr user talk page and xyr IP talk page letting xem know about our manual of style and that xyr edits were unhelpful and have been reverted. If those kinds of edits continue, xyr'll need to be warned that persistently violating our policies and guidelines would be disruptive and would lead to a block, but hopefully that won't be necessary. [edit] Blocking a vandal

Hi. I reported 209.254.39.10 as being a chronic offender based on warnings posted in his or her talk page [[1]], but you sent me a "it appears this has not occurred yet" message. Perhaps I misunderstand Wikipedia policy, but this person seems to be a nuisance that I would block if I were the supreme ruler. As it stands, however, I'll drop the matter. Hi, thank you for dealing with his latest vandalism. So far as I can see this is a vandalism-only account and he is getting near an indefinite ban. My inclination is to up the current block sharply to possibly as much as 1 month. I wonder if you could give an extension some thought, please, since I won't, of course, vary the block without your full agreement. TerriersFan 04:38, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I looked over it again and re-blocked for a week. [2] If the account acts up again, it should be indef. WODUP 05:29, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hey...

Well you might think what you are doing is good but this project has actually had a rather damaging impact upon my family. My father used to work for Enclyclopedia Britanica you see, but now, largely thanks to wikipedia, nobody wants to buy an encyclopedia so now he spends all his time traveling around the world trying to shift enclyclopedias in countries in which internet usage is low. As a consequence i don't get to see my pop much and he even missed my high-school graduation because he was away on business. So there, now you know that wikipedia isn't 100% good. --79.72.121.101 (talk) 04:48, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Nothing, really; not much to do. WODUP 04:56, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

oh yeh dude, i wanted to ask, how come you have so many wikipedia accounts? I thought that was banned under the rules and regulations? --79.72.121.101 (talk) 05:11, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

I've got a few doppelgangers and another account for segregation and security, general testing, and account creation attempts. The legitimate uses of alternate accounts, that is, alternate accounts allowed by policy, are listed at Wikipedia:Sock puppetry#Legitimate uses of alternate accounts. Hope that helps; no more vandalism, please; g'night! WODUP 05:17, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Power center (geometry)

The term "Power center" describes a type of shopping center. Check the usage pattern for the term on Google, Google News, or other source. The fact that Wikipedia has the British spelling "centre" in the relevant article Power centre does not eliminate the need to disambiguate the rare usage as a geometry term from the common commercial usage. Why should Wikipedia readers have to look at this article on their way to the article about the more common usage? Leaving this article disambiguated by (geometry) allows a redirect of "Power center" to the article Power centre. Thanks. Edison (talk) 16:10, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for making the requested change. You are a great Wikipedian! Edison (talk) 21:24, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Why was this page deleted? You're allowed to save a copy to your computer for yourself. You could work on the article, but I really think that the subject isn't notable, and the article would be deleted. There was already a deletion discussion about the subject, and the consensus was that it didn't belong. So, once you get your copy copied, let me know, and I'll remove this temporary restoration. As it is now, the article will be deleted on or after 17:43, 27 December 2007 (UTC). You are free, however, to contest the deletion by removing the PROD notice from the article if you improve the article, or if you disagree with the deletion for any reason. The real problem is that I don't think that there are any reliable sources with which to verify the information in the article, which is a reason for deletion, and if the proposed deletion is contested and the article is not improved, I will probably nominate the article for deletion. [edit] Blanking Self-Authored Page = Speedy Deletion?

Hi and Happy Holidays. So was my Talk page message unwarranted? I placed it when I saw the author had blanked the page and removed the speedy tag. But I didn't realize blanking one's self-authored page was itself a way of requesting deletion. If an WP:AUTO editor blanks his or her page when it is up for speedy deletion, do they still need to leave the tag in place? Thanks, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 04:51, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

Happy holidays to you, too. :) I wouldn't say that it was unwarranted. It was necessary to let the new user that removing speedy deletion notices from articles xe created is discouraged, and you left {{uw-speedy1}} which is polite and assumes good faith. Ideally, there'd be a speedy deletion tag in place to keep the article in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion, but if no one lists it there, the page will show up on Special:Shortpages when it's updated if the page was blanked. == Splitting a Section from an Article ==

{{helpme}}

On this Wikipedia page ---> (Wikipedia:Template messages/Merging and splitting), I found the following directions for adding a template to an article to propose splitting a section of it:

Articles to be split

  • Place this at the top of one or more sections for which a split into a new page is proposed.
  • By default, the discussion is directed to the talk page of the page on which this tag is placed. Optionally, a "discuss" parameter can be specified to direct the discussion to another page.

My Question: Can someone show me the exact syntax / format to add a "discuss parameter" -- as indicated in the sentence immediately preceding this one ... (that is, the second bullet point above)? That is, what exactly do I have to type in order to get the discussion to move out of the default location and into a specified new and different location? Thanks. (Joseph A. [edit] Randomness of name

My name is not at all random, at least not any more than your name (WODUP). WODUP is not an English word but just looks like several random letters to me. I'm sure this isn't the case in regards to your name as the letters W, O, D, U, & P have some significance for you. Likewise my name, Askdnapn39nfkjfen, holds significance for me. Chalk it up to chaos theory, but order is usually found in seemingly randomness. the Ask-dna part should be obvious: I believe that we can learn a great deal about humans, both physically and psychologically by unlocking the secrets of human DNA, thus the Ask dna. The P & N are my initials, my age is 39, and the other letters are the first initials of my children. At first I tried to create a username that was a single English word but all my options were taken so I decided to be a little creative. I'm truly sorry if you thought my username is random, but as you can see, it simply is not.Askdnapn39nfkjfen (talk) 11:53, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello!I have a request.I had made some changes to the article Sikhism, but in the process messed up the reference list, though only in a minor way.Actually the problem is or was interlinking of references.Due to the changes the primary was deleted and the rest got messed up.You can see it in the reference list. The messed ones appear in red color;No.9 and 28.Please help and correct it ASAP .ThanksAjjay (talk) 08:33, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Fixed it. Two named references that were referred to later in the article were changed, so I added the ref name for one and the citation for the other. If you need anything else, drop me a line. :) WODUP 17:13, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks.I had been fixing it for like past one hour.Slow connection(-:I figured it out in the end and was in the proces of saving , when you made the change.thanks a lot! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ajjay (talkcontribs) 17:49, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Hello WODUP, thank you so much for creating my account for me. I tried to, but apparently my account's name was alike to some "Josedaniel" account, so I requested it! Im not new here, well, at the English Wikipedia, but I'm actually from the Spanish one, I decided to create my account because I was tired of editing without one, so I'm not that new, hehe. Anyway, thank you again for creating this account and for having welcomed me. See you around! :). José Daniel (the cake is a lie.) 01:41, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

I didn't but can probably write something up to e-mail them if you think it'd do any good. I just don't know if
  1. a report would disrupt this person's phishing, or
  2. Hotmail would actually do anything based on a post on Wikipedia rather than a copy of a phishing e-mail.

Thank you very much for your consideration, but at this time I must decline. I'm glad to see that you find me a worthy candidate, but at this point I don't think I would pass at all. [edit] Wisdom's RFA

Hiya WODUP. Re: this. Wisdom (and I) appreciate the support, but RFA's have suffered before due to pre-transclusion !voting, and here Wisdom has not even accepted. Your support is appreciated, and I apologise for the word "disrespectful". I hope you understand that it is only fair that we do not have "hidden" RFA's and hence my comment. Again, thankyou. Pedro :  Chat  23:18, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

No worries, I see where you're coming from; I'll just check the RfA later. Thanks for the message. :) WODUP 23:27, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Most welcome. I didn't want to come over as harsh or pushing my personal viewpoint at RFA, but I do strongly feel that RFA's should be transcluded before comments are made (excepting nominators as that is kind of a given!) As the nominator of this particular RFA I guess I'm more of a stickler than otherwise. Thank you for your understanding, and again apologies if you felt I was too abrupt. Best Wishes and Happy Editing. Pedro :  Chat  23:33, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] User:Danielaustinhall12's Socks

I saw on Danielaustinhall's talk page that you thought that halldandude (the one who nommed him for RFA was one of Danielaustinhalls sock puppets - I think so too, so should I file a report at WP:SSP? Because he's been lately trying to tag Satanism with prods and creating numerous articles to do with crazy mouses. Fattyjwoods (Push my button) 02:12, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't think that's necessary right now. He looks like a new user who originally wanted to delete his account ([4], [5]) and who wasn't familiar with our sock policy. Now that he is or should be aware, if this blatant socking continues, we can then take further action, but until then, we should continue to assume good faith, even if he was unknowingly violating policy. WODUP 03:31, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
Sure thing :) Fattyjwoods (Push my button) 05:49, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, that's true. Sorry. I just wanted to be able to edit better. I wish you were able to delete accounts. Danielaustinhall12 (talk) 19:55, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Sock or not

The one about Halldandude vieng my sock puppet is true because on the other one I didn't know that anybody knew. I'm starting to feel like I did something really bad. I actually didn't know that was bad. And by the way, how did you get that idea that Halldandude was my "sock puppet"? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Danielaustinhall12 (talkcontribs) 20:25, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Sockpuppetering is frowned upon unless there's a good reason for it, but as long as you're honest and stop, it'll be fine; you learned something. :) I got the idea because of similarities in edit patterns and usernames. WODUP 20:41, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
