[edit] Biography
[edit] Early Life
Per-Olov was born in Bogotá, Colombia to a Swedish father and a Danish mother. Per-Olov's father Owe, worked as an engineer for LM Ericsson in Colombia to install telephone stations. The family moved to Stockholm when Per-Olov was 3 years old. He lived here from 1960 till 1970. At age of 6 Per-Olov got inspired to play guitar when he saw one day a bright red electric guitar in a shop window. The Beatles were his heroes and he specially admired Paul McCartney. His parents got him a classical guitar for his 7th birthday. In 1970 there was a documentary broadcasted about John Williams on Danish national television, since then he knew what he wanted to become. When Per-Olov was 14 years old, the family moved to bordertown Helsingør in Denmark. This way he could easily attend a Swedish high school in Helsingborg here he met his first classical guitar teacher Torvald Nilsson.
[edit] Professional Life
In 1976 he began to study at The Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen where he moved to during his studies and where he presently still lives. He studied here for 7 years with professor Per-Olof Johnson untill his graduation in 1983. Already during his study he became a music teacher, teaching at both music schools in Vallensbæk and Gentofte for 24 years; presently Kindgren only works as a music teacher at the music school in Gentofte. His work as a music teacher provides him a steady income to earn a living along the concerts he performs. In 1979 he joined with three other guitarists, Steffen Broe Christensen, Dag Egil Berge and Torsten Borbye Nielsen, the Nordic Guitar Quartet. Which over the years performed more than 400 concerts. Per-Olov composes pieces for solo guitar, as well as for duets, trios, quartets up till septets and octets for guitar. In 1998 he composed pieces for choir, orchestra and rock band for the 25th anniversary of the Vallensbæk music school and in 2000 he composed a Christmas Oratorio for organ, guitar, flutes, choir and narrator.
[edit] Musical Style
Kindgren's style is mainly classical, with influences from jazz, blues and easy listening. Besides the classical repertoire Per-Olov also plays works of The Beatles. Kindgren likes to describe his own compositions as songs without words.
[edit] Gear
Per-Olov plays on a classical guitar, built by the Swiss luthier Philippe Jean-Mairet. He bought this guitar in 1987. A friend of him, Jørgen, had bought a guitar from this Swiss luthier whom he had met in Bern during his studies and loved the superb quality of it. Per-Olov asked his friend to order a guitar for him and nine months later he could visit Philippe Jean-Mairet in Switzerland to test his guitar. Since then is his Jean-Mairet guitar the only guitar which he uses to plays.
Before he bought the Jean-Mairet guitar, he owned a guitar built by Martin Fleeson which, he had bought in 1986 in Manchester, England for 25,000.- DKK which was about € 3,350.- or $ 4,400.- in that time. One year later Per-Olov bought his Jean-Mairet guitar.
