WNIS was at one time at 850 AM broadcasting at 850kHz. 850 currently has the call sign of WTAR. The calls were switched because of the directional pattern of the 790 transmitter gave better coverage for the Hampton Roads market.
WNIS programs a talk radio format alongside sister station WTAR. It primarily carries the "first tier" syndicated programs, including Neal Boortz, The Rush Limbaugh Show, The Sean Hannity Show, The Savage Nation, Coast to Coast AM, Tammy Bruce (weekend version-- the weekday version used to be heard on WTAR until 2005), Mike McConnell (weekend version), Bob Brinker, Costas on the Radio and Bill Cunningham. Local programming includes a morning show hosted by Tony Macrini and "Buy Sell or Trade" (a Tradio program).
