Go to New York! I'm going to be visiting NYC from June 14th to the 21st. I'm soliciting my many fans and enemies for fun things to do in the Big Apple. Is the Statue of Liberty really worth it? Where's the best place to buy fresh fruit? Where's the best place to throw fruit at Yoko? Suggestions and derision welcome! WLU (talk) 23:32, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Things WLU should do

[edit] Things that don't involve whores and risk to person and property

  • Central Park (in the daytime!) is nice. The atmosphere of the city is the main thing, though. Carcharoth (talk) 12:50, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Times Square has been cleared of whores and risks and now looks like Vegas East. That said, it's still worth a visit, particularly at night when the lights are all on. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge. I also recommend a trip on a ferry either from/to New Jersey or the Staten Island Ferry - the harbor and river are way bigger than you might think. Unless you've got lots of time, the Statue of Liberty is a lot of trouble, but Ellis Island is impressive. Acroterion (talk) 14:02, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Broadway. I don't live in New York, but I visit there a few times each year. I like to go to places that have heavy pedestrian traffic, because that suggests that people find them interesting. You could do worse than walk a few miles along Broadway, stopping for coffee occasionally at the conveniently-located Barnes and Noble stores. For example, start up near Columbia University and walk a few miles south. You could walk it at 1.5 minutes per block if you are in a hurry. When you get tired, go the rest of the way on the Broadway subway, or take a bus (slightly more visual). I'm not afraid of the subway, even at night. EdJohnston (talk) 21:32, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
  • If you're up around Columbia, don't miss the Hungarian Pastry Shop and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (and unfinished). Neil Raden (talk) 02:56, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • The Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side, including the New Hayden Planetarium Neil Raden (talk) 02:53, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • And take the Staten Island ferry at dusk. The most spectacular view of New York from the bottom up for just a few bucks. Neil Raden (talk) 02:53, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • There is also a boat trip, used to be called the Circle Line, not sure if it still is, that goes around the whole island. The sights are pretty interesting but the history explained by the host is even more interesting. Neil Raden (talk) 03:00, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Things that do involve whores and risk to person and property

  • Central Park at night, apparently. Apologies if I am behind the times. I avoided the subway at night as well, but that was over a decade ago, so really don't take advice from me! Carcharoth (talk) 12:52, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Walking around at night (not in Central Park) is highly recommended (and not very hazardous if you're even slightly aware of your surroundings). No other city is as alive at night. Acroterion (talk) 14:02, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Good places to eat

  • Places with food! Category:Restaurants in New York City? Hey, no-one said you had to use Wikipedia as if it was an encyclopedia and not a guide book... Carcharoth (talk) 12:54, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Lots of cafeterias between Times Square and Rockefeller Center for lunch, lots of good (and expensive) restaurants around Union Square. Acroterion (talk) 14:02, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Ben's Pizza in Soho, corner of Thompson and Spring. Neil Raden (talk) 02:52, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
  • With the exchange rate, you'll find things are pretty reasonable. For a good, chic dinner go to Indochine on Lafayette across from the Public Theater (NYU neighborhood) Neil Raden (talk) 02:52, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
