WLIP

WLIP is a full-time radio station at AM 1050 kHz located in Kenosha, Wisconsin, U.S. serving the Chicago-Milwaukee metropolitan region along the west shore of Lake Michigan with 250 watts effective radiated power, and also streams worldwide at www.wlip.com . It has been owned and operated by Colorado-based NextMedia Group since 2000.

At 8:00 AM on Sunday, May 18, 1947, WLIP signed on the air from the basement of the Kenosha National Bank Building at Seventh Avenue and 57th Street in downtown Kenosha, licensed as a daytime-only station. In 1975, WLIP built and opened its new studios at 8500 Green Bay Road.

In the 1980s, the Federal Communications Commission granted WLIP permission to broadcast on a 24-hour-a-day basis.

On May 18, 2007, WLIP celebrated its 60th anniversary with a special broadcast from the Kenosha National Bank Building where it had its first broadcast on Mother's Day, May 18, 1947.

WLIP is an affiliate of the CBS Radio Network; former network affiliations have included the Mutual Broadcasting System, the ABC Radio Network, AP (mid 90s), Wisconsin Radio Network and CNN (2000-2003).

WLIP weekday programming today features a variety of talk shows between 5 AM CDT and 12 midnight, beginning with the local morning shows (The Wakeup Call with Bill Lawrence) from 5AM-8AM, The Lenny Palmer Show with Lenny Palmer, airing from 8 to 11 AM (and replayed as the Lenny Palmer Playback between 6 and 9 PM), and the nostalgia-based Remembering Kenosha call-in program with Lou Rugani between 11 AM and 12 noon. The entertainment-based Happenings Q & A with Frank Carmichael airs from 1 until 2 PM, and then The Doctor Laura Show with Dr. Laura Schlesinger airs until 5 PM followed by the hour-long K-Town Report news program with Lars Christiansen and Katie Dylan. The Jim Bohannon Show airs from 9 PM until midnight, and from then until 5 AM WLIP airs the Good-Time Rock and Roll music format.

Weekend programming is varied, including local oldies show (Rock & Roll Never Forgets with Terry Havel) on Saturday evenings. The longtime Music Of The Stars (since 1992) with host Lou Rugani airs Sunday Mornings from 7AM to 11AM. On Sunday afternoons, the two-hour Doo-Wop Diner with Ramundo airs beginning at 5 PM.

Stateline Spotlight with Tim Allen airing from 12:30PM-1PM many weekdays. Various local talk shows air Saturday mornings (see schedule below).

Irene Buri-Nelson, of the show Around Town with Irene Buri-Nelson, on the air over WLIP for 59 years, died in a car accident on Friday, July 7, 2006. She had worked at the station for 60 years since its beginning in 1947.

On September 1, 2007, WLIP began carrying Wisconsin Badgers football, basketball, and hockey.
