[edit] History

In 1991, the station adopted a Top 40 Rock format as Z106.1, New Orleans' Untamed Radio. However, this station is most remembered for what it became in 1992: 106.1 the Zephyr with Kenny Vest as the station's Program Director and Christian Unruh aka "West" as the first Music Director of the new format. Christian came up with the name The Zephyr.

The Zephyr was the first true commercial alternative station in the New Orleans area, and had quite a following. It has a very diverse playlist and was known for breaking a lot of great artists before other stations.

Over the years, Scot Fox, Christian "West", The Ross Man, Grant Morris, Mitch Cry, DJ MIchael Scott, T.J. the DJ, Joe from the Joe Show, Sister Sarah, Darren Gauthier, Wolfgang and John Michael were just some of the more recognizable DJ's at the station. The station also hosted "Zephyrfest" at City Park for a number of years. The station attained very respectable ratings considering it had a limited signal licensed to Picayune, Mississippi. Notable alums of the Zephyr include Drew Hauser (Rock Promotion - Wind-Up Records) and John Michael (KROQ-LA), Wolfgang (93.1) Miami and Denver Crabb, WCPR - Gulfport/Biloxi.

In 1996, 106.7 the End was launched. This was the beginning of the end (no pun intended) for The Zephyr. In 1997, the station was sold to Guaranty Broadcasting out of Baton Rouge. May 12, 1997 was a sad day for alternative fans, as the station was flipped to country as "Kiss Country 106.1". The station flipped at 6:00am. The last two songs played by Program Director Travis "dash" Johnson were REM's "It's The End Of The World" and Elvis Costello's "Radio Radio" (dedicated to Christian West) which was also the first song ever played on The Zephyr.

By January 2001 the station flipped to Adult Contemporary as Sunny 106.1. But after Citadel acquired the station in 2005, they would flip it to "Martini 106.1" on November 15, 2005.
