"Witness" is the first single from American singer Bo Bice off of his second studio album, See the Light. The studio version of the song was released on Bice's Myspace in late September 2007, and the video was released on October 17. The track was digitally released along with the album on October 23. Before that an advanced download could be accessed by pre-ordering the album from walmart.com. [1] Bice performed the song on season 7 of American Idol.
[edit] Background Information
The song returns Bice to the southern rock sound that he became known for during his time as a contestant on American Idol, but was noticeably absent from the songs on Bice's first album. There are also country influences present on the track. Like the other songs on See the Light, Bice co-wrote "Witness." It is one of the older songs from the album, as Bice had been performing the track in concerts as early as April 2007.
[edit] Music video
The video was directed by Ramon Boutviseth, a newcomer that gained Bice's management's attention after being the runner up in an online directing contest for the song Dig held by the band Incubus.
The song premiered on Yahoo! music on October 17, 2007. It begins with a homeless man on the sidewalk in a busy city with a sign reading "war vet please help." Bice walks by and gives the man money, while giving him a hopeful look. This scene then fades away, and we next see Bice on a country road, where his car has broken down. He begins hitchhiking with his guitar slung over his back, as a sign shows 40 miles to Nashville. Bice is shown walking along the highway, until a long bed pickup truck carrying bales of hay pulls over for him. Bo jumps in the back with the hay, and eventually starts to play his guitar while they are driving along the road. When the truck gets to Nashville, Bice gets off the truck, and goes up to the window to thank the driver. After Bice shakes his hand the driver takes off his sunglasses, and Bo realizes it is the homeless man he gave money to in the beginning of the video. Bo smiles, and thanks the guy again, pointing back to him as he pulls away.
Throughout the video, Bice and band members are also shown playing in an open warehouse with a large fan and banks of lighting in it.
"Witness" spent three consecutive weeks at #1 on VH1 "Top 20 Countdown" in December 2007. During that same period of time, "Witness" was ranked #2 on VH1 Video on Demand, and Bice's "See the Light" was ranked #1 Album on the VH1 site.
