From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Withington is a village in Herefordshire, England, about five miles (8 km) north-east of Hereford at grid reference SO565434.
Pete Farndon, bassist and founding member of the rock band The Pretenders is buried at St.Peter's Church, Withington.
One of the historical features of Withington is the Roman mile post situated on the Worcester road. The only thing that can still be read on it is "This is the road to Hereford"; it was part of a cross but was made in to a mile stone in 1700.
Withington also has a church and small primary school. It is a small village surrounded by fields, but has a growing population with new houses being built.
The inhabitants of the village can often be found supping on some local ales at the Cross Keys Inn. The public house is hometo landlord Chris Corbin and his wife Sandra. They provide a fantastic atmosphere and the quoits team, led by skipper Hilda is scorching up the Inter-continental championships.
The area is well served by the tremendous 420 bus service which runs at regular intervals providing the locals of the village a much needed link to civillization. This route has often been travelled by the well known Wellington Under 18's starlets Scott Walker and Nick Bullock.
Withington used to be home to the Meadow Market, a supermarket that serviced the local community, and it was later bought and re-named by the Normans Super-Warehouse chain. This became the northern most branch of Normans. The store closed in 1998 and became several smaller shops on the newly named Withington Retail estate. The site now stands as a housing estate.
