could this be the basis for the mutant in ultimate x-men volume 8 (New Mutants)? His powers were similar however his kicked in much faster (actually 'vaporizing') and covered a wider radius (well beyond touch). Also, he had no compulsion per se, it was just an uncontrollable power.

I believe they reference what his clothes are made of in one of the issues, as something he has to deal with. He can't destroy just anything that contains carbon, it has to be something that is alive or was alive at one time - ie cotton and leather would disintegrate from his touch (as shown in one of the first issues of New Mutants) --Ghola8
