Wish You Were Here is a musical with a book by Arthur Kober and Joshua Logan and music and lyrics by Harold Rome.
Set in Camp Karefree, a mountain resort for adults, it focuses on Teddy Stern, depressed about her upcoming marriage to a man she doesn't love, who arrives with her flirty blonde bombshell friend Fay for two weeks of rest and relaxation. Before long, she finds herself becoming entangled romantically with one of the waiters, charming law student Chick Miller.
The Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Logan, opened on June 25, 1952 at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 598 performances. The cast included Patricia Marand, Jack Cassidy, Phyllis Newman, Larry Blyden, Harry Clark, Florence Henderson, Reid Shelton, Tom Tryon, and Sheila Bond, who won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. It also won a Tony for Best Stage Technician, a category long since abandoned.
The elaborate set included a fully functional swimming pool.
The West End production opened on October 10, 1953 at the London Casino, where it ran for 282 performances.
