Wirragulla (also spelt Wiragulla)[1]is a railway station on the North Coast Line branch of CityRail's Hunter Line in New South Wales, Australia. It serves the rural locality of the same name. Diesel railcars travelling between Newcastle and the town of Dungog serve the station.

The station currently consists of a single wooden platform about 3m long. A ramp connects the platform with the small car park and Dungog Road.

[edit] History

A station first opened at Wirragulla on the 14 August 1911 and this station featured a proper platform.[1] On 20 October 1975, the station was demolished and replaced with the small wooden platform which exists today, in order to reduce the maintenance costs due to the low patronage at the station.[1] In the late 90's it was proposed that Wirragulla, along with Allandale and Belford would be closed, as all 3 stations had extremely low patronage, and there were some safety concerns at these stations. The decision to close these stations was later withdrawn (this explains why Allandale, Belford and Wirragulla are not shown on ticket machines installed in the late 90's). Allandale and Belford were closed in 2005.[2] Currently there are not any known plans to close Wirragulla. In April 2007, new Hunter Railcars began to service Wirragulla for the first time, providing enhanced comfort and security for commuters.
