Wipeout teams

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wipeout series of video games has had a cast of fictional racing teams that vary from game to game, with several teams consistently making repeat appearances. Each team is typically represented by its geographic region of origin rather than by individual pilots, though the original Wipeout and Wipeout Fusion presented two pilots apiece for each team.

"Let's Be Friends!" (Wipeout 3)
"For The Good of Mankind" (Wipeout Pure)
"A Friend in Speed" (Wipeout Pulse/Wipeout HD)
Team history: AG Systems began in Europe, but was bought by a Japanese company in 2042. Their past alignment with the European community may explain why their ships have similar performance to Feisar's. AG Systems was later bought out by G-Tech, much like Qirex was bought out by Tigron. Like the Qirex team, AG Systems was revived with the fall of the F9000 League. AG Systems were declared Champions of the 2206 FX300 Racing League following the disqualification of Triakis.
Ship traits: Traditionally, AG Systems ships display great balance, highlighted by strong acceleration and decent handling, but shielding has typically been a weakness. In Wipeout Pulse, the shields of the AG Systems ship were given a boost to above-average levels.

[edit] Auricom Research Industries

"You're Never Alone with a Clone!" (Wipeout Fusion)
"Pushing Back the Boundaries" (Wipeout Fusion)
"Have a Nice Day" (Wipeout Pure)
"The Auricom Way" (Wipeout Pulse/Wipeout HD)
Team history: Auricom is an American corporation founded by former AG Systems staff, and is one of the most successful racing teams of all time. They are long-time bitter rivals to Qirex-RD, a feud that extends to the early years of the sport. Auricom is the only other team to appear in each installment of the Wipeout series, other than FEISAR.
Ship traits: Auricom ships are typically suited for intermediate-level pilots, with good top speed and shield capabilities, but only average handling and thrust as a result of high mass frames.

[edit] Qirex Research & Development

Qirex Research & Development

 v  d  e
Appearances: Wipeout
Wipeout 2097 / XL
Wipeout 64
Wipeout 3
Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure
Wipeout Pulse
Wipeout HD
Team Colors:
Origin (est.): Russia (2045-2149 re-established 2179)
Ship models: Quantax Design Model 4 (Wipeout)
Quantax Dynamics LS07 (Wipeout Pulse)
Pilots: Kel Solaar (Wipeout)
Arian Tetsuo (Wipeout)
Nadia Elenova (Wipeout Pulse)
Mottos: "[Ex-Rated]" (Wipeout 3)
"Extreme Force" (Wipeout Pure)
"High Speed Revolution" (Wipeout Pulse/Wipeout HD)
Team history: Qirex is a Russian team that is characterized by having very heavy, yet quite fast ships that have trouble in corners. Their craft are typically favored by more experienced players. Interestingly, the team began racing as a violent team that used their power and speed to muscle down the course, but as Qirex matured, they started racing "cleaner," so to speak. Qirex are poised to make a strong return to the front of the grid in the new FX400 Racing League.
Ship traits: Up until the F7200 Anti-Gravity Racing League, Qirex built craft that boasted heavy frames and powerful engines, they were among the fastest ships in a straight line and had strong shields, but sluggish handling made them a team suited for only the most experienced pilots. Since their return to the series, the Russian team's machines have lost a lot of their edge, their top speed has been reduced to average levels - however, they are much more maneouverable and the shields are still some of the strongest among their competitors.

[edit] Piranha Advancements

Piranha Advancements

Appearances: Wipeout
Wipeout 2097 / XL
Wipeout 64
Wipeout 3
Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure

Team Colors:
Origin (est.): Brazil (2097)
Ship models: P.666 v. prototype (Wipeout 2097 / XL)
Piranha II (Wipeout 64)
Swiftkiller 6.0 (Wipeout Fusion)
Pilots: Myima Tsarong (Wipeout Fusion)
Jann Schlaudecker (Wipeout Fusion)
Mottos: "Feed Me" (Wipeout 2097 / XL)
"Advance" (Wipeout 3)
"The Hungriest Team Around" (Wipeout Fusion)
"Just When You Thought It Was Safe..." (Wipeout Fusion)
"Hungry For Speed" (Wipeout Pure)
"With Added BITE!" (Wipeout Pulse/Wipeout HD)
Team history: Piranha Advancements is the most secretive of the anti-gravity racing teams. They made waves during the F5000 league by arriving with an unarmed prototype and dominating the other teams. Piranha apparently began in China but moved to Brazil early on in their development and have since remained there. Rumors used to abound that the team was run by the military. Their ships are traditionally fast and precise, their designs sleek and drop-dead sexy. However, their FX300 ship, appearing in Pure, has handling characteristics that leave much to be desired.
Ship traits: Piranha ships in recent Wipeout games have an incredible top speed, only matched by that of Icaras, but this is off-set by slow acceleration, and the high-mass frames cause the Piranha to have heavy handling. As a result, the Piranha is best suited for expert pilots.

[edit] Assegai Developments

Assegai Developments

Team Colors:
Origin (est.): United African Nations (2113-2150 re- established 2181)
Mottos: "3000AD" (Wipeout 3)
"Achieve" (Wipeout Pure)
Team history: Assegai was initially an African team, but was bought by Piranha Advancements during the F9000 League, but were treated as a separate entity from their new parent company. Note that an "assegai" is a spear or javelin used especially by the Bantu peoples of South Africa. Assegai Developments' original craft is fast, light, slender and sharp pointed and even colored brown, much resembling an actual assegai.
Ship traits: The newest version of the Assegai seen in Wipeout Pulse is a throwback to their original design featured in Wipeout 3, a lightweight craft with agile handling but weak shielding - however, the extremes between these two parameters have been lessened a bit. The Pulse Assegai is a good ship to use for pilots of all skill levels.

[edit] Goteki 45

Team Colors:
Origin (est.): Pacific Islands (2095-2137 re-established 2202)
Mottos: "Go!" (Wipeout 3)
"Future Proof" (Wipeout Pulse/Wipeout HD)
Team history: Goteki 45 is a company based in the Pacific Islands, specifically the man-made island of Makana. The team became infamous for its violent tactics, not looking to compete so much as to destroy as much as possible. Due to their arrogant brutality, their base on Makana was bombed during the time of the F9000 Racing League. Prior to their return to the sport in the FX300 Racing League (which was held on their home island of Makana), the company was placed under new management that sought to reverse Goteki 45's old image of a destructive menace.
Ship traits: Normally the Goteki 45 has average handling and mediocre top speed. But while their shields are strong and durable, it is acceleration that has proven to be their strong suit - the thrust of the Goteki 45 is incredibly powerful, allowing it to reach top speed faster than any other machine.

[edit] Icaras

Icaras

Wipeout 64
Wipeout 3
Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure
Wipeout Pulse

Team Colors:
Origin (est.): Great Britain (2109-2140 re-established 2199)
Ship models: SunGod XVi (Wipeout 3)
SG-FX300 (Wipeout Pure)
Mottos: "Fly Icaras" (Wipeout 3)
"Flying High" (Wipeout Pulse)
Team history: Icaras was an odd team that was founded by Burnston Burns and funded by various interested organizations. They created a multi-finned racer that was fast enough to outstrip any other ship in the game. Only Piranha has matched their crafts in top overall speed. However, it was not the magic bullet, because along with the high speeds came a terrible handling capability, requiring immense amounts of technical prowess to even complete a race in one piece, which, according to reports, was rare. The Icaras team's infamous strategy was carried into the FX300 League, surprising everyone with a new design with improved handling capabilities, but with easily the worst shielding of all the teams.

[edit] Harimau

Wipeout HD
Team Colors:
Origin (est.): Malaysia (2177)
Mottos: "Hi" (Wipeout Pure)
"A Force of Nature" (Wipeout Pulse/Wipeout HD)
Team history: Harimau is a bit of an oddity: a team that willingly participates in a high-octane and sometimes violent motor sport in the name of global peace. They pack a nimble craft that seems to reflect their mission: theirs is a racing craft first and combat-equipped second. They are based in a coalition of South-East Asian nations, primarily in Malaysia.

[edit] Triakis

Triakis

 v  d  e
Appearances: Wipeout
Wipeout 2097 / XL
Wipeout 64
Wipeout 3
Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure
Wipeout Pulse
Wipeout HD
Team Colors:
Origin (est.): Australia/Multinational (2197)
Mottos: "Mega©" (Wipeout Pure)
"Hard©ore" (Wipeout Pure)
"Danger Ahead" (Wipeout Pure)
"Three Times More Power" (Wipeout Pulse/Wipeout HD)
Team history: Triakis is a global arms dealer that decided to showcase their wares during the peaceful era of the FX300. As such, their ship is heavy, very fast on straights, and can withstand considerable damage. This comes with the cost of having truly horrendous handling, making it an extremely challenging craft to pilot on technical courses, but a formidable force on high speed courses. They were disqualified from the FX300 league after their reverse-inertia deceleration system was deemed illegal by the AG Racing Commission and therefore AG Systems won.
Ship traits: During the small period Triakis is available in the Wipeout series, Triakis has managed to show itself as a very heavy, and also a very durable craft, though hard to handle and with slow acceleration. With its high durability and its above average speed, Triakis is a strong opponent, and a hard to drive craft for the starting pilot.

[edit] Tigron

Tigron Enterprises

 v  d  e
Appearances: Wipeout
Wipeout 2097 / XL
Wipeout 64
Wipeout 3
Wipeout Fusion

Team Colors:
Origin: Russia
Ship models: Bull-666 v3.1 (Wipeout Fusion)
Pilots: Omarr Khumala (Wipeout Fusion)
Sveta Kirovoski (Wipeout Fusion)
Mottos: "Are You Ready To Play With Fire?" (Wipeout Fusion)
"Burn Baby Burn!" (Wipeout Fusion)
Team history: Tigron is a Russian team that bought Qirex during the time of Wipeout Fusion, but lost them after the sport's collapse sometime between Wipeout Fusion and Wipeout Pure. Their craft are recognized as being heavy and durable. The Bull-666 v3.1 craft that appears in Wipeout Pure is their last Anti-Gravity racer, saved from the fate of rotting in an old hangar. Tigron is known to be violent, using their ships as battering rams due to their high shield capability. Their militaristic tactics and anvil of a ship gave rise to rumors that they were run by remnants of the KGB.
Ship traits: Not only the looks of a battering ram, but also the capabilities of a battering ram, characterise the craft made by Tigron. They are very heavy and hard to handle, but capable of actually ramming their opponents into the track boundaries. Their heavy shielding and high top end come at the expense of proper handling and thrust, which makes it even hard for the expert pilot to finish in the top three.

[edit] Van-Über Racing Development

Appearances: Wipeout
Wipeout 2097 / XL
Wipeout 64
Wipeout 3
Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure
Wipeout Pulse

Team Colors:
Origin (est.): Germany (2143)
Ship models: 2E-320 Series 4000 (Wipeout Fusion)
Pilots: Songen Grey (Wipeout Fusion)
Nami Mishima (Wipeout Fusion)
Mottos: "Rest in Pieces" (Wipeout Fusion)
Team history: The German firm Van-Uber is notorious for the quirky designs of their ships and their questionable aesthetics, particularly their long front stabilizers out on booms. Van-Uber ships tend to have something of a 'Marmite' appeal. It also has an unusual center of gravity that makes the rear of the ship pivot outward during sharp turns. Nevertheless, the team has built a solid reputation with their powerful and unique machines.
Ship traits: In the two Wipeout games this team has appeared in, it has been a very agile craft with average speed. All at the cost shielding and acceleration. Novice pilots should be careful driving this ship as they have the less shielding and should be aware that they keep an eye out on their shield levels.

[edit] Xios International

Xios International

Origin: Finland
Ship models: SMF-X iii (Wipeout Fusion)
Pilots: Natasha Belmondo (Wipeout Fusion)
Zala Wollf (Wipeout Fusion)
Mottos: "Artificial Intelligence" (Wipeout Fusion)
"We Think So You Don't Have To" (Wipeout Fusion)
Team history: Finland's Xios International was an elite group that used pure high technology to stay ahead. Their ships were suitably fast and stable, second only to Piranha. The team was very conspicuous, mostly because Natasha Belmondo, the granddaughter of anti-gravity pioneer Pierre Belmondo, was their lead pilot.

In 2172 Xios merged with EG-R Technologies to become EG-X Technologies.

Pilots: Paul Cheung (Wipeout Fusion)
Alex Reece (Wipeout Fusion)
Mottos: "People's Heroes!" (Wipeout Fusion)
"Creating A New Age Of Civilization" (Wipeout Fusion)
Team history: EG-R was a Chinese firm that seemed to be even more secretive than Piranha, going so far as to threaten nosy officials. Nevertheless, they race cleanly. Their stick-like ships were thought to have used alien technology, or at least were built with some very unethical techniques. EG-R ships were particularly fast in a straight line, with Piranha their only equal.

The team merged with Xios International in 2172 to become EG-X Technologies.

[edit] G-Tech Systems

G-Tech Systems

Appearances: Wipeout

Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure
Wipeout Pulse

Team Colors:
Origin: Japan
Ship models: D-4 Revver (Wipeout Fusion)
Pilots: Roberto Sergio (Wipeout Fusion)
Naomi Turner (Wipeout Fusion)
Mottos: "Products For An Accelerated Age" (Wipeout Fusion)
"If It Floats, It's G-Tech" (Wipeout Fusion)
"There Is No Gravity... The Earth Sucks" (Wipeout Fusion)
Team history: G-Tech bought up AG Systems during the days of the F9000 League (Wipeout Fusion), much like Tigron absorbed Qirex. Following the collapse of the league and the eventual rise of the FX300 League (Wipeout Pure), they have not been heard from. Their methodology for developing the G-4 Revver was simply to buy their way out of any design problems, and the resulting ship was a durable yet distasteful craft that was quickly outstripped by the rest of the field.

[edit] EG-X Technologies

EG-X Technologies

 v  d  e
Appearances: Wipeout
Wipeout 2097 / XL
Wipeout 64
Wipeout 3
Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure
Wipeout Pulse
Wipeout HD
Team Colors:
Origin (est.): China/Finland (2172)
Mottos: "Linked Technology" (Wipeout Pulse/Wipeout HD)
Team history: Formed in 2172 when F9000 League superpowers Xios and EG-R merged, EG-X was something of an unknown quantity going into the inaugural season of the FX350 League. It turned out that they were more than ready to go racing, though, scoring a number of high placed finishes with relative ease for a team that did not contest the FX300 League.

Opting not to release data from pre-season testing for the FX400, the performance of the EG-X chassis has only been seen by those quick enough to catch a glimpse of the sleek ship as it was put through its paces. What was obvious without the data is that the craft is fast out of the corners and appears to have a good top speed, too. So look for this dark horse partnership between China and Finland to be strong contenders at the front of the grid.

[edit] Mirage

Mirage

 v  d  e
Appearances: Wipeout
Wipeout 2097 / XL
Wipeout 64
Wipeout 3
Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure
Wipeout Pulse
Wipeout HD
Team Colors:
Origin (est.): United Arab Emirates (2202)
Mottos: "Seeing is Believing" (Wipeout Pulse)
Team history: Formed in 2202 by the wealthy sand baron Sheikh Mani Zayed, the Mirage team will take the Mantis chassis perfected at the Mirage Anti-Gravity Excellence Centre (MAGEC) outside Dubai, and field elite pilots who have graduated from the centre's developmental programme. With the Mag Strip track technology also being a product of the MAGEC development labs, expect Mirage to get off to a quick start in the FX400 League – especially after their strong showing in pre-season testing and clinical performances in the FX350 League events.
Ship traits: The Mantis craft appears to be the most balanced of all of the teams, performing strongly in top speed, acceleration, handling, and shields, it's the kind of race craft where the pilot can make a the difference.

[edit] Minor teams

[edit] Zone

Appearances:

Team colors:

  • Silver

Origin (est.):

  • Anti-gravity Racing Association (2197)

Known ship models:

  • "Zone Ship"

To call Zone a team is a bit of a misnomer, since they are owned by the race's governing board as a test of pilot skill. The Zone ship is used to test pilots by having a supremely powerful craft with nearly limitless amounts of speed and agility on tap. One catch: its shields are practically nonexistent. The ship, in Wipeout Pure's "Zone Mode", slowly accelerates to an extremely fast top speed, and the pilot is scored on how long he/she can keep it in one piece. The version authorized to race in the actual circuit is a redone version of this strange, almost ethereal-looking ship, with similar statistics.

[edit] Al-Vaskei Research and Development (a.k.a. Puma / Wire05 / Guardian / Patriot)

Appearances:

Team colors:

  • Depends on sponsor

Origin (est.):

Originally built for a Saudi president's son so he could race in the F9000 league of Wipeout Fusion, this craft was severely limited in terms of performance and funding. In the FX300 League, the team came back totally retooled, with a promising craft, but out of funds. Accordingly, the team races under its current sponsor's colors.

[edit] Quantax (a.k.a. Puma)

Appearances:

Team colors:

  • Depends on sponsor

Origin (est.):

Known ship models:

  • F7200-era Quantax Design Model (number unknown at present)

Quantax was an offshoot of Qirex shortly before the FX300 League was born. The Quantax team's name is derived from the similarly named line of Qirex's old crafts. As such, the latest Quantax model shares the original design and specs of early Qirex crafts. It was founded when one of Qirex's older designers stated her dissatisfaction with the new Qirex ships and decided to build her own, while staying true to Qirex's old formula.

[edit] Medieval

Appearances:

  • Wipeout Pure

Origin (est.):

  • Unknown (2197)

Mottos:

  • "It's Time To Get Medieval"

Wipeout rarely features magic and the occult as shtick, but the Medieval team is an exception, as the team consists of the undead. As such, their ship looks decidedly Dark Age, which can contrast with the technological theme of Wipeout. Their craft are very fast and able, but the shields are far weaker than normal, an indicator of a certain disregard for personal safety by the dead racers. Its design is polarizing amongst fans, since Wipeout is a futuristic racer, and an anachronistic team like Medieval is extremely jarring with typical Wipeout themes.

[edit] Stealth

Appearances:

Team colors:

  • Dark gray

Origin (est.):

Known ship models:

The Stealth team is a tie-in with the 2005 film, Stealth, distributed via a limited promo version of Wipeout Pure bundled with the film on UMD. Their stay in the FX300 League was indeed brief, and the impression the "team" leaves is a very poor one. While they may have above-average top speed, their acceleration, turning, and shield qualities were average at best, and sorely inadequate at worst.

[edit] CokeStyle

Appearances:

The shapes of coke craft is just like a coke bottle.
