WIPZ

WIPZ is an FM radio station broadcasting at 88.5 MHz. It is located at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The station started out on AM 1620, and moved to 1610 as well as FM 101.7 in the late 1990s. The radio station signal extends from the west side of Racine to Kenosha. History: The station began as the "UW-P radio club" in the early 1990's. In 1995, Mike Dicello, Adam Miller, Nicole (Sicuro) Leipski, Stephanie (Hess) Witkiewicz and Lisa Nalbandian ran various fundraising efforts that was greatly aided by the 1997 Communication Seminar class project, a major fund-raising concert/party at Marina Shores in Kenosha, WI. Dicello, et al., also worked with various Wisconsin stations to donate their old equipment to "the radio club." They were often assisted by Terry Havel, a Milwaukee (102.1 FM) DJ and radio broadcasting teacher and director of Burlington High School's WBSD 89.1 FM. T. Havel served as a consultant and allowed the group to practice technical skills live and on-air at the Burlington HS station on Thursday nights from 1996-1998. The group referred to Havel "as the patron saint of Parkside Radio." The original space given to the group was in The Den of the Union, the next venue in 1996 was a 4th level (to roof access) room of Molinaro Hall. Once the station had the technical means to go on air, the station moved to its current location in the D1 level of Molinaro Hall. Due to the technical efforts of Mike Dicello, fundraising efforts by the radio club and the Communication Seminar class of 1997, the group was able to use the donated equipment to get the station on air on-campus. In 1996 the station went live on air on campus and became UW-Parkside's "radio station," has been ever since.
