It first built and opened in 1953[citation needed]. It serves secondary school students ages between 11 and 16. The current building is due to be demolished in 2009 to make way for the new state-of-the-art School, Oasis Academy Wintringham.

The school was first divided into a Boys' and Girls' grammar school, and is now a comprehensive school

[edit] Academic performance

Before becoming an academy, it was slightly one of the better schools in Grimsby, but nonetheless had low results.

The School is to be transformed into an Academy, and the new state-of-the-art buildings will replace the current ones with a cost of £2 million.

This is one of the 200 Schools in Great Britain to be transformed into a 'Super School' by private funding and central government[citation needed].

The existing school will close in August 2007 and re-open as an Academy in the existing buildings in Sept 2007. The Academy will transfer across to the brand new buildings during the academic year 2008-09.

The start of construction work will be marked by a groundbreaking ceremony on 30 August, where Steve Chalke MBE and students from the new Academy will drive the first spades into the ground where the Academy and community facilities will be built. Scunthorpe's Clugston Construction Ltd has been appointed to complete the build, which is due to be finished in 2009.
