Winter Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Winter Island is a small peninsula off Salem Neck in Salem, Massachusetts, joined to Salem Neck by a causeway.
[edit] Boundaries
It borders the following bodies of water: Smith Pool (northwest), Cat Cove (west), Juniper Cove, and the Salem Channel (north, east, and south.)
[edit] Presence
The island/peninsula contains a very small residential, commercial, and historical presence. Winter Island Road is the only road. On the north end, near Juniper Cove, there are ten privately owned single family houses. On the eastern shore is the Plummer Home for Boys, which owns the central portion of the island/peninsula.
[edit] Attractions
Winter Island Marine Park is located on the former site of the Fort Pickering Coast Guard Base. It's a marine recreational park open to the public. The park takes up the southern portion of the peninsula.
The main attractions of the park are the historic Fort Pickering, the Fort Pickering Lighthouse, Salem Harbor, and Waikiki Beach. In the park, the ten historic signs describing the attractions are linked by a compass rose where the reader must follow the direction in bold to find the next attraction. It is labeled an interpretative guide.
